MCAULIFFE ALERT Dem. Chairman Seeks to Modernize Party (big, really big barfer)

After disappointing elections like the Democrats had in 2002, it might be expected that their national chairman would already be gone or fighting off a challenge.

But Terry McAuliffe is in the midst of pushing the party through a critical transition in its technology and fund-raising techniques. And there appeared to be little sentiment among those attending the party's winter meeting this week for interrupting his task. Democrats lost the Senate in 2002, fell further behind in the House and didn't win as many governorships as they expected.

The top job for Democrats is replacing the $100 million in unlimited "soft money" donations from corporations, unions and individuals that the party collected in the cycle ending with the 2000 presidential elections.

Dummycrat constituency) many of whom they pardoned for big buck campaign
contributions, I shudder to think where the Dumbocrats would be today( snicker).

You know, the only way they can get around the lack of soft money is through massive increases in hard money. Since their base isn't one to shell out $1000 checks, I predict they will try to give people money and have them write the checks individually (which is, of course, illegal).

They will have to cut thousands of small checks....thousands.

I think they will try it. I also think they will get caught.

They can also use that patented "pass the hat" routine that the war protesters use. Pass hat, and even if you get nothing, eposit an odd amount of cash in an account.

I don't know if political groups can do that, though.

I consider it my duty to think of scams they may try to pull, because you are quite right, they are plotting right this minute.

Yeah, and it's been done before.
