February 19, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - Saddam Hussein plans to use chemical weapons to create a ring of death around Baghdad to slow down a U.S. invasion and turn the city's residents into hostages, a former Iraqi scientist said yesterday.

This doesn't surprise me. I am sure this revelation doesn't make any difference for the anti-US, Saddam supporters around the world.

I consider this a ridiculous option. It would be Saddam doing our work for us....the seige of Baghdad while ceding the rest of the nation to us.

Besides, don't they realize that chemical agent has an application life of a relatively short time.

I don't believe this report.

"blame any humanitarian disaster on the U.S. military."

It's pretty hard to cast blame when your dead.

A "ring of death" with chemical weapons would be a disaster of unimaginable proportions. If there was any wind at all, from any direction, some of the gas would cover the civilians, killing tens, and prehaps hundreds, of thousands of innocents.

Holding his own citizens hostage to maintain power has got to be one of the most evil plots ever.

Of course not, they will just say he is justified in defending himself from the evil Cowboys.

There is really very little that the US can do to stop this. Unless they take Saddam out in the first 24 hours and utilize the EMP bomb they keep whispering about (taking out communications ability in and around Baghdad). I think Saddam would not hesitate to kill 250,000 Iraqi citizens just to make America look bad. The US military has no intention of killing a single civlian. We just want Saddam and his family.

I recognize that handwriting and spelling. I think that it was written by Miss Germany only last week.

"There has been discussion within his circle to set up what they call a 'chemical belt' around Baghdad using his chemical weapons to entrap the residents inside," said al-Shahristani.

How can they do that? Afterall, Sadman Insane says he doesn't have any such weapons.

OOps!!

Me either - I'm sure our troops are prepared for it.

I was discussing this with a friend the other day the whole idea that saddam will certainly use deadly chemical weapons against our soldiers.

Wouldn't that kill his own army too? Has that aspect been addressed much by the shrill talking heads?

So if he does use it, we wear our special suits, hold back, wait for the wind to shift, hang out a couple of weeks, and then walk over the corpses of the former Iraqi army.

All that we need to do is check the wind direction and follow the gas cloud into Baghdad.

Does anyone in here have any links to the reports or threads from several months ago wherein the Iraqi government said something like "if you leave Baghdad, your assets are ours." I could have sworn I saw something like that but haven't heard it mentioned lately.

I ask because we'll want to have that info handy if this gets ugly - info explaining that Saddam, by restricting the travel of Iraqi citizens, exacerbated the problem.
