Canada: Al-Qaeda Plotting Assassinations in U.S.

Canada's National Post reported this weekend that Wayne Easter, Canada's Solicitor-General, revealed that Canadian and U.S. intelligence agencies suspect al-Qaeda terrorist cells may be planning assassinations of North American politicians.

"Al-Qaeda, we know is a terrorist operation so it is to be suspected that if they could, they would go after public officials," Mr. Easter told the National Post.

He would not not say if Canada is taking special precautions to protect Canadian political leaders, but heplayed down the potential of a direct terrorist threat to Canada.

The paper added that unlike the United States and Great Britain, the Liberal government has not declared a heightened state of alert for fear of creating unwarranted public anxiety or panic, insisting there is no evidence to justify placement of anti-aircraft missiles on the streets or tanks at Canadian airports.

Sources have told the National Post that new intelligence obtained by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), the FBI and the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency suggest al-Qaeda terrorist cells in Canada and the United States are plotting strikes against the United States, including assassinations of prominent politicians.

While the threat is directed at American public figures, sources warned Canadian politicians should not be complacent in thinking that al-Qaeda terrorist cells here would not target them or Canadian installations.
