WASHINGTON -- Critical industries and key infrastructure should take steps to guard against potential terrorist attacks, including checking for possible infiltrators among employees, according to a new government warning.

The FBI and the National Infrastructure Protection Center said in the bulletin that security routines should be varied and officials should think back to unusual incidents that might indicate they are being targeted.

Employees....!

Situation much worse if even longterm employees are considered critical threats and worthy of suspicion.

The counterterrorism folks must be very unsure about the trustworthiness of even long term residents and certain citizens of the USA when such a sweeping, across the board warning is sent to employers.

Sounds to me the threat is huge. And in our midst.

Watch out for all the flower and chocolate delivery guys today, eh?

Notice the story is on page A34. I think it's more deserving of a prominent placement.

I am confused. The only way employers can "check for possible infiltrators among employees" is by using some form of profiling, but if they use profiling of any kind they will be sued.

How exactly can this be complied with?

That's why the TSA has all those screeners at every airport in the country.

As soon as the first firecracker goes off in a shopping mall they will be able to deploy them to every mall in the entire country.

Within a few months the welfare rolls will be empty because all the high school dropouts will have full employment as minimum-wage Gestapo, and you will have to undergo a strip-search to enter a Starbuck's.

Not if you know what you're doing...... ;-)

Answer -- The FBI is profiling but not saying so. Of course, they have to.

Now they want employers to tell them what some of their employees are doing.

Length of residency, US citizenship do not automatically take you out of the shadow of suspicion. Long term jihadi cells have burrowed into the fabric of America, waiting patiently for their time, heretofore safe under the veil of suburbia, kids and Americana.

THE FBI cannot tell who individually is a threat or not, so a blanket warning has been issued to hopefully smoke out the jihadis.

Dunno about you guys, but this seems a fairly dramatic announcement.

You could be descended from the Pilgrim fathers, and have blond hair and blue eyes, but you might have secretly converted to Islam and joined the jihad. The only way to find out is to investigate everyone.

Reminds me of a famous guy, actually, a fellow named James Jesus Angelton...

So, what're you saying, that this bulletin should be discounted as fear mongering?

Well, not exactly. The words 'impossible', 'absurd', and 'self-defeating' come to mind. But if you say that, they'll just think you're a terrorist trying to cover up.

Change the word "dramatic" to "draconian" and I will readily agree.

Okay, draconian, then.

Could that be because the threat is so high. Draconian measures for drastic times.

No. It's because the statists have perceived an opportunity to destroy freedom that is too tempting to resist.

The mythical "freedom versus security" tradeoff is a false choice.

The 911 attacks did not occur because Americans have too much freedom.

They occurred because terrorists were able to gain access to the cockpits of hijacked aircraft.

Instead of retrofitting all commercial aircraft with doors which could actually be used to keep terrorists out of cockpits, Washington created an Orwellian monster named the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and hired tens of thousands of minimum-wage Gestapo to root through the underwear of airline passengers and arrest/prosecute those who object.

Simply setting foot in an airport is now considered to be a terrorist act.

The fact that the TSA created a national airport police force without ever addressing the cockpit-door scandal is damning evidence that their mandate has nothing to do with protecting anyone.

The true purpose of the TSA is to turn America into a police state.

Airports are the incubators.

The statists want to condition us to accept the idea that probable cause is dead and they can search our houses, our hard drives and our persons and demand to see our papers at any time.

After Patriot Act II, there will be Patriot Act III, IV, V, VI and on and on until "freedom" is considered to be an archaic, obsolete concept that only a wacko would be concerned about

ANTI-TERROR ÜBER ALLES

It seems to me that many of these companies/industries should build in a balance of checks for their procedures. The threat to our country can come from people with names like Walker, Hansen and Ames. Sabotogue can occur for various reasons, including revenge.

Thorough security in sensitive sectors should be implemented for reasons in addition to the threat from terrorism.

After the Trade Center bombing (in the 80's?) security in corporate offices was big, but gradually was relaxed. Time to ramp it up again.

This notice reminds me of the report of one of the sprinkler maintenance guys for the World Trade Center. After Sept. 11 they caught some guy that provided fake passports to one or more of the hijackers. The forger had also provided papers to the sprinkler maintenance guy.

Time to review those records again and have a "re-evaluation" of all personnel.
