Show of support The weather doesn't dampen their patriotic spirit as rally attendees express their approval of President Bush By Jennifer Radcliffe Star-Telegram Staff Writer

BEDFORD - Nearly 1,000 North Texans braved wind and rain Thursday night to show support for President Bush and his push to take military action against Iraq.

Holding signs that read "Support America or Get Out" and "Boycott Liberal Hollywood," supporters chanted "Good Job George" at the Texas United Rally, which was sponsored by news-talk radio station KLIF/570 AM.

"You guys get it. Don't forget what we did here today. Don't let it wane," Darrell Ankarlo, station morning show host, told the crowd at a field across Hospital Parkway from Harris Methodist H.E.B. hospital.

Rally attendees said they hope that the event Thursday inspires similar activities nationwide. Too much attention has been given to the anti-war movement, they said.

"I hope this catches fire," said Gary Howsley, 62, of Weatherford. He brought along his Dalmatian, Dot, who had a sign reading "I trust George" attached to her rain slicker.

"She's a Republican dog," Howsley said.

The rally comes on the heels of several anti-war protests conducted across the state. Two weeks ago, about 300 peace activists turned out for a rally in Dallas.

Ankarlo encouraged participants to be vocal in their support for Bush and to boycott the motion picture industry to send a message to anti-war celebrities such as Susan Sarandon, Spike Lee and Janeane Garofalo.

"We're Americans, and we're not going to take this lying down anymore," he said. "We have the right to be proud of George W. Bush."

Bush supporters are a sleeping giant, he said.

"This guy's got such a good thing going," Azle resident Wanda Novak said of Ankarlo. "I'm tired of the anti-war stuff. They're encouraging the other side."

Many people brought their children to the rally, saying it was important for them to see Americans stand up for their country.

"No country should have to be told who they are and what they should or shouldn't do," said Jeannie Trussell, 28, of Arlington, who brought along her three children.

Rally-goers said Iraqi President Saddam Hussein should have been toppled during the first Persian Gulf War.

"This is really the first pro-American rally that's been around," said Chad Cochran, 22, of Euless.

"But I think there's going to be more to come. I think it's going to ignite."

I was there last night and Freepers were mentioned by the local DJ. My posters had FreeRepublic.com on them and several people came up to me to ask about Free Republic. It was a great show of support for our president and our military forces!

There were tv crews there from WB33, Fox and the local CBS affiliate. The best coverage was from WB. I can't tell everyone how exciting it was to be there. There was a guy who dressed up like W and held a platter with Sadam's and UBL's head on it. It was a hoot!

I heard about this on the radio--their number was over 3000. I was listening to the Glen Beck show. He also mentioned that the Dallas Morning News completely ignored the event.

Thanks to all of you who showed up to represent the rest of us who couldn't be there.

From what I understand, Glen Beck was so excited about the event, he is planning his own in several of his markets. Dallas Morning News totally ignored the event. I expected no less from that fish wrap!

Hey, this was NEXT DOOR to me, and I didn't know about it! I would have been out there DECKED OUT in Red White and Blue, carrying a huge sign saying "We'll put a boot in your @ss, it's the American Way" borrowed from Toby Keith.

Man, I feel so cheated!
