$2 Federal Cigarette Tax Hike Sought
Increase Could Cut Use And Save Lives, Health Commission Tells Bush
By Ceci Connolly Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, February 13, 2003; Page A29
A federal health commission on smoking is recommending that the Bush administration raise the federal tax on cigarettes from 39 cents to $2.39 a pack, arguing that the huge increase could prevent 3 million premature deaths and help 5 million Americans quit smoking within a year.
At least half of the $28 billion expected to be generated by the tax increase would be invested in anti-tobacco efforts such as a national quit line, a major advertising campaign and insurance coverage for federal workers seeking treatment.

This should help bump up Al-Qaeda's cigarette smuggling business in North Carolina.

"At least half(Yea, right, sure) of the $28 billion expected to be generated by the tax increase would be invested in anti-tobacco efforts such as a national quit line(employmet project for losers and unionized federal workers), a major advertising campaign(Off election jobs for political consultants) and insurance coverage for federal workers seeking treatment.( They are unionized. If they want something, payback the taxpayer, most of whom earn less then them.)

If the demon weed is really so bad, then why does this same FedGov redistribute confiscated tax dollars to tobacco growers in the form of subsidies?
Oh, I forgot, they have an 80% commission on all taxes

I looked at their prices.
Even without tax they are charging better than $5.00 more than I can get them here.

I'm a non-smoker so I can't comment on that. I do hear the smokers here in Idaho say they do better buying at the Indian smokeshops. You might find it worth checking around on the web an see what you can do. Just a suggestion.

Just a couple of things.
"There is a lot of science on the impact of cigarette prices on consumption," said Ron Davis, a trustee of the American Medical Association and a member of the panel that wrote the report. "A 10 percent increase in price will lead to a 4 percent decrease in consumption."
Incorrect. A 10% increase in price means a 4% decrease in taxable SALES, not necessarily on consumption
In its 40-page report, the Interagency Committee on Smoking and Health documents the toll of tobacco-related illnesses on society. Of the 50 million smokers today, researchers project between 15 million and 25 million will die prematurely; about 100,000 people die of lung cancer each year.
Where DO they get these numbers from?
This is so much BS that I have to go put on my waders.
We need to catch this one early folks.
Let your representatives know that this is TOTALLY unacceptable.

YOMO, stuff your own.
For an investment of about $35 to $40 dollars you can stuff your own for about $8 a carton.
I use an expensive tobacco and stuff my own for about $18 a carton.

They need to just legalize all the drugs and tax the heck out of it. More jobs, more taxes, and crime will be nil. It worked for booze and it is working for cigarettes.

We have already had our first murder over a truck full of cigarettes in New York that had an estimated value of 1 million dollars.
