Landrieu disavows Estrada ads

Sen. Mary L. Landrieu, who is now opposing the nomination of Miguel Estrada to a federal appeals court judgeship, ran Spanish-language radio ads during her campaign for a December runoff election saying she supported his nomination.

The ads, which ran on a New Orleans radio station for almost two weeks, praised Mrs. Landrieu's outreach to Hispanics and specifically noted Mr. Estrada.

I hated watching the two candidates run for the Louisiana seat in December. It was all about two very medoicre persons, neither of which had or has any potential to be anyone who will be taken seriously about anything. Sad really. It was one of the poorest choices out there frankly.

"She lied to the community, and now she's turning back on the community that helped elect her," said Sharon Castillo, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee. "I sure hope that the voters are going to hold her accountable."
She also said it was "another example of Democrats saying anything to get elected."

The usual empty words from an empty pantsuit. Taking real responsibility would involve actually doing something other than mouthing insincere apologies. At the least, this demonstrates her incompetence at not knowing what her campaign was doing. At most, it demonstrates the sort of venality and contempt for morality at which Democrats excel.

Semantics. She still took advantage of the misunderstanding to get votes and didn't correct it until today.

Landrieu is every bit as duplicitious as Hillary. She just flies below radar. No matter what she says in the "Ivory Tower" confines of Capitol Hill it ain't going to wash with the folks in her home state. The following excerpt is from a Louisiana Republican Party email:

"This is a slap in the face of the Hispanic community. We feel betrayed by Mary Landrieu's actions. Besides a despicable show of partisanship, Senator Landrieu is disregarding the judicial crisis our country is facing," proclaimed Oscar Avila, an activist in the New Orleans area Hispanic community.

While U.S. Senator John Breaux (D-LA) and an overwhelming number of Hispanic organizations are supporting the confirmation of Miguel Estrada, Senator Landrieu has said "she is withholding a decision on the nomination until she can check further into his background to determine whether he is 'truly in the mainstream' of judicial opinion, as his supporters maintain."' Sen. Breaux further expressed outrage at Landrieu and Senate Democrats by saying; 'Look, the country is on Orange Alert. We're telling people to stockpile water, duct tape and plastic to secure their safe rooms; we have a war within the next couple of weeks possibly in Iraq; who knows what is going to happen with North Korea; and consumer confidence is at an all-time low,' " Breaux said. "Now is not the time to be tying up the Senate on a nominee who is given the very highest recommendations by the American Bar Association." In the final days before the November elections, Landrieu's campaign ran a radio ad stating that "Mary Landrieu has worked close to the Hispanic community. Mary Landrieu also supported the candidacy of Honduran Miguel Estrada for the Federal Court of Appeals." (Campaign Ad, KGLA 1540 AM, Friends of Mary Landrieu)

"Miguel Estrada deserves a vote on the Senate floor. Mary Landrieu and all those trying to delay or obstruct a vote should and will be held accountable by the Hispanic community who entrusted them," said Dr. Vinicio Madrigal, Chairman of the Louisiana Hispanic Republican Coalition.

It is disgusting and disheartening. They lie and their base just ignores it. What worse, the press provides cover for them. It makes me sick.

How ridiculous is this statement!! Can you imagine an ad "I am proud not to oppose this nomination..." She got CAUGHT in a lie...and this is the best backtrack she can come up with. She is simply to STUPID to be in the Senate, in that case.
