Amber Alert Issued in Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore, Md. - An unlicensed cab driver sped away with a two-month old girl Tuesday after robbing her father, who escaped with her twin sister, the man told police.

The report prompted State Police to issue their first Amber Alert for A'Shia Monic Jenkins, who was last seen at about 7:45 a.m. The father hailed the illegal cab, an unmarked older model, white Honda, in a busy section of northwest Baltimore, said Detective Donny Moses.

The girls' father, Kenneth Jenkins, then got into the car with his two daughters. The driver pulled over several blocks later, pulled a gun and demanded money, Jenkins told police.

"He got one (of the babies) out, got her into the stroller, and when he turned around to get the other one, the driver drove off," said Moses, who questioned Jenkins and his wife later at their home.

The girls' mother was at home at the time of the robbery, Moses said.

A'Shia was last seen wearing a purple snowsuit, pink T-shirt and a purple hat. Jenkins said the car had a Maryland license plate containing the letters "JFK" or "FKJ".

The driver was said to be a black male in his late 20s with black hair, wearing a black and white striped shirt and black pants and shoes. The car was last seen heading south on Druid Hill Avenue.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Baltimore County Police Department immediately at 410-396-2100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP. Tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 reward.

Local police departments were alerted to the girl's disappearance via the Amber Alert system, Moses said.

The Amber Alert is modeled after a program started in Texas in 1996 following the abduction and murder of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman. Since then, several states have started similar programs.

It's easy for me to have hindsight, but I would not have been worried about putting the first baby into a stroller. Yank both girls out ASAP and get back behind (though not directly behind) the vehicle. If you lose the stroller, carry them to safety.

We had an Amber Alert here in the PHX area just a few days ago. I had never heard one before. Kinda shook me up. Little 4 yr. old girl was found within 15 minutes of the first alert. The guy ditched the car in a Home Depot parking lot with the little girl inside.

Deep sigh of relief when they cancelled the alert.

The AMBER ALERTS are the best tool law enforcement has and I for one will never every complain that they are used too frequently. Every effort to find a missing person is welcome.

I agree with you. Being more concerned about putting the first child into the stroller before removing the second one from the cab just doesn't make sense. In defense of the father, I'm sure he wasn't thinking straight at the time. But had I been in that situation, I never would have gotten out of that cab without both babies in my arms. Stroller be dammed!

This was really odd on the Washington D.C. beltway today. All of the BIG traffic warning signs said "Amber Alert" then had a car type and tag number. It caused a lot of traffic jams because nobody had a clue what the signs were talking about. My first thought was "Uh, Oh... terrorist stuff happening near by." Then I thought, "Wait we are on code orange, not code amber." Then I remembered that the snow caused a lot of code red days (govt. closed) except for the one school district in VA that was code green (school closed). All of the other school systems were code red, yellow, or blue. Too many colors for too many issues...

Yeah, that seems kind of counterintuitive. My wife and I are now wondering if that's what really went down. I hate to even think it, but with so many crackpots nowadays...
