Freepers...this is a fascinating use of computer technology. Grid Computing, along with IBM and other sponsors is looking for people to join the PatriotGrid.
Similar to the SETI project, members allow the distributed use of their computer (only when it is in idle mode) to run computer programs to find treatment for Smallpox and other bio-weapons.
This is using the spare "cycles" in your PC to fight terrorism.

My company, IBM, is signing up volunteer employees to do the smallpox project internally.

I posted an article about this a few days ago, and I'm glad you are posting a little more info for those who haven't seen this yet -- seems like a great cause and a great way for Freepers to make a contribution to science and national defense.
The earlier thread is here:

I've been using this program for a few days now and overall the experience has been real good -- I encourage otheres to try it. I notice no loss of computer performance, and the program comes with cool graphics.
In the past when I wasn't using my machine, it would indicate the CPU was running at 3% to 8% of capacity. Now the meter stays pegged at 100% all the time.
There's only one thing I might mention. I signed up because I intended to help with smallpox research. And while it is true that smallpox research is going on, this organization seems to have an even bigger cancer research project going on. If you sign up, your machine might be used for smallpox research at times, and other times it will work on the cancer project -- the allocation seems random, and your machine might go back and forth from one to the other.
While I might prefer my machine work exclusively on the smallpox matter (because of my interest in national defense matters) I guess this dual-use strategy isn't a problem.
Hopefully someone else will do some other posts on this topic every few days, so as many Freepers as possible will see it and get involved.

Nobody gets access to my PC when I am not present/using it. Also, I have a problem with leaving electrical equipment running when nobody is home. So I'm not signing up. Period.
