Course: ARTH 250: Art and Archaeology of Ancient America |
|
Course Catalog Description: Art and archaeology of ancient Mesoamerica from 500 B.C. to 1500 A.D. |
|
|
Required? Met a General Ed./diversity/other requirement with a few course options. |
|
|
Comments: Let me start by pointing out that this is an art history class about Mesoamerica, one that has nothing to do with sociology, politics, or the middle east. I took the course because it seemed like a fairly painless way to satisfy the "diversity" requirement. This turned out to be wishful thinking. Apparently being a "diversity" class gives the professor the right to bash American foreign policy in the middle east and glorify terrorism. During the second to last lecture, when we should have been learning what was going to be on the final, he started with his usual lecture about understanding these "oppressed" people in the middle east. He made us out to be the evil oppressors and said that we don't understand these people (Islamic Terrorists) until they BLOW it into us (in reference to September 11). He then got very animated and began to pretend that he was a terrorist. He made the point to the class (evil America) that if we tried to buy him, he would tell us to take our money and shove it up our asses. This all culminated in him pretending to strap a bomb to himself, sitting down next to a student, and saying something to the effect of, "If you try to get rid of us, we'll take you with us." If this is not glorifying terrorism then I don't know what is, and because the professor chose to use this class to impose his political views upon us (as opposed to teaching the subject matter), we barely made it through the first book of two that we were supposed to cover. |
|
|
Comments: The TA did a very good job. He simply taught us the subject matter that applied to the course. He was open to any ideas expressed by the students and did not express any political views. |
|
|
Comments: The books (the is the one that we actually made it through) had nothing to do with his lectures. They were actually about Mesoamerica. |
|
General Comments: This course could have been very interesting. It was ruined by another college professor who uses his classroom to tell students how they should think. The above statements made by Professor Miller clearly show that he was in violation of the University System of Maryland Policy on Faculty, Student, and Institutional Rights and Responsibilities for Academic Integrity. (See http://www.usmh.usmd.edu/Leadership/BoardOfRegents/Bylaws/SectionIII/III100.html) Part 1, Section B states: "Faculty members shall enjoy freedom in the classroom to discuss all subject matter reasonably related to the course. In turn, they have the responsibility to encourage free and honest inquiry and expression on the part of the students." Part 1, Section C states: "Faculty members, consistent with the principles of academic freedom, have the responsibility to present courses that are consistent with their descriptions in the catalog of the institution." Professor Miller did not stick to the subject matter reasonably related to the course, he did not encourage free and honest inquiry on the part of the students, and he most certainly did not present the course in a manner consistent with its description in the course catalog. |

Doug, I am not educated. I only went to high school But when I saw Kruchev pound his shoe on that desk, I had enough sense to believe him. I KNEW the communists would inflitrate our schools/universities and could never understand how other people didn't believe the warning or ignored it. So America has nobody to blame but itself over professors like the one in the article.
On a related issue, I also watched the McCarthy hearings and saw how righteous he was in rooting out communists. The Reds got rid of him though through character assassination. Hollywood was able to go back to work in bringing down our society. So it always makes me LAUGH IN DERISION when I see how SHOCKED people are that the movie industry has an overabundance of extreme leftists. It stands to reason they would do nothing but hire more of their own.
BTW, have you ever noticed how the gay community is attached to American bashing? The individual may not be gay, but I guarantee there's a gay in the woodwork somewhere. Example: Barbra Streisand's son is a homosexual director in Hollywood. This makes me wonder if this professor is a homosexual pervert and just close he is to the "gay" community.
Sorry for the rant, but this has been nagging at me for the past couple of days - ever since I read the thread listing the actors to boycott. That was a list of almost 100. The list of actors to support? NINE!
Reading about this puke just added to my angst. Thanks a lot. LOL

This is interesting. I know a professor or two that needs to go on this board.
To: JudyB1938
Judy, to the contrary --- you are very well educated.

Please put them up on the board. I have been sending the info about the site to college Republican groups. All of these whackjobs need to be outed so it will put pressure on the administrators and donors to stop this nonsense.

"What is it with people named Arthur Miller?"Yeah, I mean, after all, he was great during the Big Band era. Playing trombone, leading the band, and even touring around Europe during the war, entertaining the troops. It was a shame he went missing over the English Channel.
PAUSE
Oh ...? That was Glenn Miller?
PAUSE
(In my best Emily Latella voice) ... Never mind.

Arthur Miller, formerly a playwright and husband of Marilyn Monroe.
Arthur Miller of Harvard Law, never wrote plays or married Marilyn Monroe.
Or is it the other way around?

BTW, how's the boy in the Navy? I haven't seen an update lately. He's on the USS Nimitz, right?
I pray for his continued safety.
To: JudyB1938
Thanks for the prayers. He's on the BIG STICK -- the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT.

Let we forget:
A Conference in New York
In March 1949, New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel played host to one of the strangest gatherings in American history. Less than four years after Allied troops had liberated Hitler's concentration camps, 800 prominent literary and artistic figures congregated in the Waldorf to call for peace at any price with Stalin, whose own gulag had just been restocked with victims of his latest purge. Americans, including Lillian Hellman, Aaron Copland, Arthur Miller, and a young Norman Mailer, joined with European and Soviet delegates to repudiate "US warmongering." Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich told the delegates that "a small clique of hatemongers" was preparing a global conflagration; he urged progressive artists to struggle against the new "Fascists'' who were seeking world domination. American panelists echoed the Russian composer's fear of a new conflict. Playwright Clifford Odets denounced the ``enemies of Man'' and claimed the United States had been agitated into ``a state of holy terror'' by fraudulent reports of Soviet aggression; composer Copland declared "the present policies of the American Government will lead inevitably into a third world war."

Sidney Hook, Mary McCarthy and other anti-Stalin left wingers organized a counter conference to this Moscow-bankrolled event.
