Italian Premier Berlusconi to Visit Bush in D.C.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi will visit President Bush, probably this week.

Secretary of State Colin Powell announced the visit at a news conference Monday afternoon, without providing details. White House officials said they expected the visit Wednesday or Thursday.

Bush has consulted with like-minded leaders in the run-up to possible war with Iraq, and Berlusconi has firmly backed the United States on the issue.

The European Union is split into two camps, with Britain siding with Washington in advocating military action sooner rather than later. Italy, Spain, Portugal, Denmark and the Netherlands largely agree.

But France and Germany, joined by Austria, Belgium, Sweden and Luxembourg, insist that war can only come after a fresh U.N. Security Council resolution.

Bush meets Friday with another staunch ally, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, at Camp David. The prime minister of Poland, another strong supporter of the United States, visits Bush on Feb. 5.

Berlusconi was treated to a Camp David visit with Bush in September. He and Bush spoke about Iraq on Saturday.

Note the timing of the visit. Even though it has apparently just been scheduled, Berlusconi is coming this week, in just a couple of days.

Berlusconi has liked and supported President Bush from the very beginning of Bush's presidency.

The Spanish PM had a phone conference with Bush this morning...Yes, things are happening.

To heck with the Germans and the French. Frankly, much of the rest of the EU would be happy to see them get taken down a peg - the EU essentially functions as a way for Germany to control the economies of the rest of Europe, or so many Europeans think.

Being an Italian American myself, it is my opinion that Berlusconi needs to show the world that we support President Bush and are more than Italian ices, pizza and Soprano re-runs.

If that were all Italian-American's had contributed to this country, it would still eclipse the contributions of the French.

Berlusconi suggests a UK-Spain-Italy Alliance to counter the Franco-German block. Italy and Spain currently conduct joint naval activities with their 2 carriers and have formed a rapid deployment force for the Mediterranian basin.

My granparents had a deli in Astoria, Queens, NYC until the late 70's. I remember when ices were 25 cents, the smell of coffee beans in wood barrels, fresh bread, cold-cuts and fresh tomatoes from my Grandpa's garden.

How old are you? I'm 45, and lived in Astoria until the late seventies. Probably know your grandparents!
What Deli?
