OFFICIAL ESTIMATE AT U.S. MARCH FOR LIFE: 200,000

WASHINGTON, January 24, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) -

LifeSite spoke today with Nellie Gray the organizer of the March for Life in Washington D.C. Gray told LifeSite that the official estimate of those at the March was 200,000.

Jim Hughes, President of Campaign Life Coalition Canada attended the March and told LifeSite that it was "Unbelievable." Hughes recalled "We were standing at the staging area and we couldn't move, it took almost an hour to start walking. It was the coldest day in 10 years in Washington but we were kept warm by a sea of bodies. Everyone was upbeat and positive with average age under 25. It was a joyful mass of people talking, praying, chanting ... a very positive experience."

Gray said she was not concerned that the liberal media basically ignored the March. "Our work must go on, this is God's work," she said.

I will wait anxiously for ABCNNBCBS to report this March and Rally on their evening news on Monday!

Oh wait.

Yeah.

It's not a 25 person anti-Bush rally by stupid liberals. THAT they time for.

MAJOR U.S. NETWORKS IGNORED MASSIVE MARCH FOR LIFE
WASHINGTON, January 24, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Media Research Centre has issued a stinging evaluation of the major networks failure to cover the March for Life. "True to the historical pattern and despite the 30th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision, ABC, CBS, and NBC studiously ignored (the Jan 22) March for Life in Washington, a stark contrast with the Bush-bashing anti-war march just four days before," says the MRC.

Compared to the in depth and extensive coverage of the anti-war rally which drew 10,000, the March for Life which drew a few hundred thousand received relatively no coverage.

In contrast to the networks featuring of sound bites from marchers in the anti-war protest over the weekend, the ABC, CBS, and NBC stories on Wednesday night did not include a syllable from any participant, on stage or in the crowd at the massive March for Life. Despite tens of thousands of pro-lifers in Washington and just tens of pro-abortion protesters (a midday Planned Parenthood rally was estimated by Reuters at 150), Dan Rather misled viewers into assuming large crowds on both sides: "Tens of thousands of demonstrators on both sides of the issue filled the streets of Washington today."

The ABC and CBS newscasts also ignored Bush's phone speech to the crowd; NBC and ABC's Nightline each ran just a 14-word sound bite of the President's supportive remarks.

What, no fair and balanced press coverage by members of the "neutral" media?!

Where were the hoardes of cameramen, the teaming throngs of reporters?

No doubt they were looking the other way, franticly hoping that their ideological opponents would simply march away into the quiet night.

...such is the sad state of journalism in America today...

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS TO THE MARCH FOR LIFE

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
January 22, 2003

Remarks by the President to the Right for Life 2003 Rally on the National Mall Via Telephone From St. Louis, Missouri

11:05 A.M. CST

THE PRESIDENT: Well, thank you, Nellie. I want to thank you very much for including me in the celebration of life. I want to thank the good folks there on the Mall today. I'm calling you from St. Louis, Missouri. I know there are some from Missouri there and, like many others, you've made great sacrifices to come to Washington today. A lot of you have ridden buses all night long and I know you're braving the cold. And I admire your perseverance and I admire your devotion to the cause of life.

You all are gathered today on the National Mall, which is not far from the monument to Thomas Jefferson who, as you all know, is author of our Declaration of Independence. And the March for Life upholds the self-evident truth of that Declaration -- that all are created equal, given the unalienable rights of life, and liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And that principle of America needs defenders in every place and every generation.

In our time, respect for the right to life calls us to defend the sick and the dying, persons with disabilities and birth defects, and all who are weak and vulnerable. And this self-evident truth calls us to value and to protect the lives of innocent children waiting to be born. (Applause.)

You and I share a commitment to building a culture of life in America, and we're making progress. As the President, I have signed the Born Alive Infants Protection Act, opposed the destruction of embryos for stem cell research, and refused to spend taxpayer money on international programs that promote abortion overseas. (Applause.)

MS. GRAY: Thank you.

THE PRESIDENT: My administration is challenging the Oregon law that permits physician-assisted suicide. (Applause.)

MS. GRAY: Thank you.

THE PRESIDENT: We support abstinence education, and crisis pregnancy programs, and parental notification laws. We offer compassionate alternatives to abortion by promoting adoption and extending state health care coverage for unborn children.

My hope is that the United States Congress will pass a bill this year banning partial-birth abortion, which I will sign. (Applause.) Partial-birth abortion is an abhorrent procedure that offends human dignity. I also urge the Congress to ban all human cloning. We must not create life to destroy life. Human beings are not research material to be used in a cruel and reckless experiment. (Applause.) For 30 years, the March for Life has been sustained by constant prayer and abiding hope, that one day, every child will be born into a family that loves that child and a nation that protects that child. And when that day arrives, you will have the gratitude of millions -- especially those who know the gift of life because you cared and you kept faith. May God bless you all and may God continue to bless America.

MS. GRAY: Thank you, Mr. President.

END 12:08 P.M. EST

Just curious but where did the "official" estimate come from? I support your cause but suspect the estimate in the light of the failure of "official sources" to provide estimates of the number of people involved in recent antiwar protests.

The only reason they hesitate to estimate the anti-Bush rally is because only about 1/10th of their original planned estimate showed up, and they were just the communists.
I suppose the liberal press decided they didn't want to bring the failure to light.

Dream on! I was at a march several years ago - well, actually, it was just before the inauguration of Killer Bill - where we had an enormous turnout, probably close to 500,000, and it was totally ignored by the press. Oh, wait, I think the NY Times had a tiny mention on a back page. Of course, that was the day that Killer Bill celebrated by signing one of his many pro-death laws. And that was what got the gushing coverage.

This year as well, even with lots of people and a message from the President, you can look for it in vain in your local rag.

I've seen the pictures and they indicate to me hundreds of thousands present at the protests. The odd thing is 'news' outlets like Fox being unable to give an estimate lacking government guidance.

Dear Polycarp,

Sorry I missed you at the march. The Mass that used to be at DAR Constitution Hall was combined with others into a Mass at the DC Convention Center. Our group chose to eat an early lunch in the Convention Center before braving the cold. I didn't arrive at the Mall until around 12:30, and never got close to the flaming sword monument.

I was disappointed to have missed you again, this year. But I wasn't disappointed at the crowd.

It seems to get younger to me each year.

;-)

. Everyone was upbeat and positive with average age under 25.

Meanwhile, across the continent in San Francisco, the average age of those who engaged in the naked anti-war protest was 60.

This bodes well for the future of this country.

Fox claimed an estimate 30,000 commies at the anti-Bush rally. The pro-lifers certainly have them beat like crazy. No wonder the liberal press won't even mention them. They kicked liberal commie butt.

Unfortunately, my plans hit a scheduling snag, and this was the first time in many years I was unable to attend the March. Bummer.

This bodes well for the future of this country.

Liberalism is inherently infecund.

Conservatives will beat liberals simply by liberalism's attrition rate and lack of replacements.

My impression is that Bush is kissing communist Chinese butt, whenever and wherever he can. Globalism is no friend of the Constitution or the United States.

Sorry. I'm not a conspiracy buff. You're barking up the wrong tree here. I like Bush.

Dear Polycarp,

I'm sorry to hear that. It was an invigorating day.

The cold kept us on our toes, as well.
