Homeschool dads no longer content to sit on sidelines

January 18, 2003 Associated Press

CHICAGO -- For Tim and Nicholas Peebles, school is always in session - even at the grocery store.

As the father and son stroll the aisles, Tim finds plenty of visual aids to teach 8-year-old Nicholas about subjects like health and nutrition, agriculture and economics.

No longer content to sit on the sidelines, fathers like Tim Peebles are getting more involved in what was once firmly a woman's domain: homeschooling.

Erika Karres, an education professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said she has seen an evolution in fathers' roles since homeschooling first caught on in the 1960s and 1970s.

"The role of dads then was nonexistent, except maybe nodding their heads and saying, 'OK, if that's what you want to do, wife,"' Karres said. "I welcome this as a great, positive change in the homeschooling movement."

Why did it make you gag? I'm a homeschooling father, and work at home. My wife teaches the youngest and I assist, and I teach the oldest and she assists. We dedicate our lives (after God) to our children, to ensure they are moral, loving, caring, respectable young children.

They will be productive members of society, and have a deep love for our country and truly understand the sacrifices of those that made us/keep us free.

We are raising leaders. Most homeschoolers are.

It is one way to ensure the future of this great republic: raise and educate children that truly understand history.

Yep! WE didn't homeschool our older two, though we considered it many times. When the younger two got to the end of 7th and 5th grades, we knew we'd had enough of schools. I don't really 'teach' them. They read their material and we discuss it. Sir SuziQ handles the Math and Science and I do everything else. He loves their being home all day because if he stays home to get work done here in the morning he can spend time with them. He only works 5 mins. from home, so he usually comes home for lunch, checks their Math and spends time with them then as well.

When the two older boys went off to college, he realized just how much of their lives they had spent apart from him in school, or doing school related things or homework, etc. He wanted to spend more time with the younger two, getting to know them better. To me, this has been the most wonderful benefit of homeschooling. We all just enjoy spending time together!

I'm still a long way from being a father and considering my age may never become a father. However, when looking at a woman as a potential wife, I consider whether I think she'd be able and willing to homeschool kids. I think most families will do better when the man is the primary breadwinner (although I have nothing against those in other situations), and I doubt that I would ever quit work to teach my kids full-time. However, if my kids were homeschooled, I would be actively involved.

That article made me gag!

Yeah, the idea of having to spend all that time with your kids really sucks, right?
