TEHRAN --The Brazilian Ambassador to Tehran, Cesario Melantonio Neto, paid a visit to TEHRAN TIMES and met with Parviz Esmaeili, the managing director, discussing various issues.
The ambassador stated the general and economic policies of his government, especially after the election of the new president of Brazil. He said that the most important issue in his country today is the unequal distribution of income and wealth.
This, he expressed, has caused hardship to about a third of the population who live below the poverty line, despite rich resources and economic potential of Brazil.
Neto said that the internal market comprise only 75% of the population as consumers, due to the fact that they do not possess the purchasing power to be counted as consumers. He reiterated that the newly elected government, capturing a high number of votes, intends to eradicate poverty through land distribution and empowering poor people to contribute toward production.
Esmaeili on his part congratulated the ambassador for the New Year as well as the newly elected government of Brazil. He considered South America as one of the important regions in the world in terms of its strategic position, energy resources, and ecosystem.
He expressed regret that South America has always faced crises, the last one of which is witnessed in Venezuela now. Great powers and in particular the U.S., must refrain from interfering in other nations internal matters, he added. Every country has the right to decide about its own future.
The managing director said the role that South American nations could play in establishing security for their neighbors, would prevent the repetition of coups d'etat and violent interference by foreign powers. The Brazilian ambassador explained the extensive range of his country's activities encompassing diplomatic, economic, cultural, and ... with the Islamic Republic of Iran. He said, "We believe and insist that enhancing dialogue between civilizations and cultures can very much help bring nations closer together, and facilitate better arrangements in international relations."
Neto also announced the setting up of Farsi language and literature teaching faculty in Brasila University.
He called for the strengthening of regional cooperation organizations such as 'Mercosur' and others. He stressed that developing and strengthening ties with Iran has been among the main policies pursued by the government of Brazil.
President Lula in particular emphasizes forging ties and getting the two countries closer together.
The managing director of TEHRAN TIMES reiterated that all nations must try to prevent and resist the hegemony of powerful states who wish to alter the future of others. He hoped for the expansion of ties between the two countries during Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's presidency and the ambassador's stay here in Iran. He also wished the Brazilian government success in pursuing its planned social and economic programs.
