President Bush is unlikely to join a Supreme Court battle over whether public universities may favor racial or ethnic groups for admissions.

Two sources close to the administration deliberations told The Washington Times that the White House has received a legal brief from the Justice Department backing white students who say they were denied admission to the University of Michigan because of "race-conscious measures."

I here many 'conservative' Bush backers talk about how he is a real leader, someone who excecls at leadership. To them I say either they are wrong or Pesident Bush is leading in the wrong direction. If the WH doesn't do what is right in this case then I'll be very disappointed.

Staying silent on this one and letting SCOTUS do the heavy lifting may be the way they go.
I don't like it, but I understand it, given the incessant race baiting from the political left and their media cohorts.

"Conventional wisdom" also said that Pickering would not be re-nominated after the "Lott mess". "Conventional wisdom" is almost always wrong.

The WH has GOT to stay out of it. This is for the judicial branch to decide---and just imagine if the SCOTUS does the right thing and decides AA is BS and outlaws it, thereby ending handouts for minorities. The race card will be played by the Democrats saying President Bush is a racist.

Besides the separation of powers, he needs to stay out of it for political reasons and let the justices do the right thing on their own. It's about time.

Just as expected by conservatives, Bush is a coward and will not step forward to do what is right. Re-election means more than than the rights of Americans.

After Florida, one can only imagine what they will say about the Supreme Court if the White House submits a brief and the justices outlaws it.

"In his pocket" comes to mind.

George W. Bush must decide between setting off an electrifying jolt of principle by opposing affirmative action, or yielding to heavy political pressure by saying nothing combustible

I think you have no idea what "conservatives" suspect. I suspect you are anything but conservative.
