WHO ARE THE WRONG PEOPLE?

While Democrats Want More Power In Washington To “Target” Tax Cuts To The “Right” People, President Bush And The Republicans Want Tax Relief For All Tax-Paying Americans

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

DASCHLE ON THE PRESIDENT’S TAX CUT: “The tax break the President is said to be proposing is the wrong idea at the wrong time to help the wrong people.”
(Senator Tom Daschle [D-SD], Democratic Response To The President’s Weekly Radio Address, January 4, 2003)

PRESIDENT BUSH AND REPUBLICANS WANT TAX RELIEF FOR ALL TAX-PAYING AMERICANS

Under The President’s Plan, 92 Million Taxpayers Would Receive An Average 2003 Tax Cut Of $1,083. 46 million married couples receive an average cut of $1,716. 34 million families with children get an average cut of $1,473. 6 million single women with children receive an average cut of $541. 13 million elderly taxpayers get an average cut of $1,384. 23 million small business owners receive cuts averaging $2,042. A typical family of four with two earners with $39,000 in combined income gets $1,100 in tax relief under the President’s plan.
(“Taking Action To Strengthen America’s Economy,” The White House, January 7, 2003)

President Bush Said His Plan Provides Relief For All “Working Citizens.” “This is a plan that provides tax relief to the working citizens. It’s a plan that is a very fair plan. It’s a plan that recognizes when somebody has more of their own money, they’re likely to spend it, which creates more jobs.”
(President Bush, Remarks In Photo Opportunity With His Cabinet, January 6, 2003)

President Bush Recognizes That Ending Dividend Taxation Will Help “A Lot Of People,” Including “Most Seniors.” “A lot of people get dividends . . . . Most seniors -- over 50 percent of the seniors receive dividends. . . . [T]he reduction in taxes on dividends will encourage capital flows, capital flows into the marketplace. . . . [I]t will encourage investment, and that’s what we want. We want to encourage investment activity. Investment means jobs.”
(President Bush, Remarks In Photo Opportunity With His Cabinet, January 6, 2003)

All Americans, Particularly Middle-Income Families, Small Businesses And The Unemployed, Will Benefit From The President’s Plan. “Middle-income families will receive additional relief from accelerated reduction of the marriage penalty, a faster increase in the child tax credit, and immediate implementation of the new, lower 10 percent tax bracket. . . . Every small business owner who purchases equipment to grow and expand will get assistance through an increase in the expensing limits from $25,000 to $75,000. Every worker who has lost his or her job and qualifies for unemployment benefits will get more help, and many will qualify for new, more flexible Personal Re-employment Accounts . . . .”
(“Taking Action To Strengthen America’s Economy,” The White House, January 7, 2003)

BUT THE DEMOCRATS WANT TO PICK AND CHOOSE WHO GETS TAX RELIEF

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) Said The Democrats’ Plan Will Be “Targeted To Those Who Need It.” “Our economic stimulus package will be fast-acting and targeted to those who need it – working families and small businesses. . . . We will consider tax cuts . . . that provide relief to those working families and businesses who are most vulnerable during an economic downturn.”
(Representative Nancy Pelosi, Press Release, December 10, 2002)

Senator John Edwards (D-NC) Also Said He Disagrees With The President On Who Needs A Tax Cut. “My difference with the president is not that I disagree that we need tax cuts. My difference is what those tax [sic]do. I think we need tax cuts that go to people who need the tax cuts and for whom it will have a real impact on their lives, help them educate their kids, get access to health care, not tax cuts for the richest 1 percent of Americans.”
(CBS’ “Evening News,” January 2, 2003)

Senator John Kerry (D-MA) Criticized Across-The-Board Tax Cuts, Claiming Poor People “Don’t Get A Break.” “[T]his is a case of ‘here we go again,’ back to 1981 with Ronald Reagan. The American people have a clear choice. We can go back to Reaganomics, where you cut much more than you can, give a big tax cut mostly to the wealthy at the expense of a lot of people at the lower end.”
(CNN’s “Late Edition,” February 25, 2001)

Daschle Said Economic Stimulus Must Target “Middle Class Working Families.” “[T]he benefits of an economic recovery plan should focus on middle class working families rather than the wealthy. Ensuring that this plan helps the people who need it most is not only the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do: out of necessity, those people will put that money back into the economy immediately.”
(Senator Tom Daschle, “Letter From Senator Daschle To President Bush On Economic Stimulus,” December 12, 2002)

This one is the hook. The Democrats want senior citizens to choose between paying taxes and buying medicine.

those people will put that money back into the economy immediately

Oh, okay, Tommy boy.

And I suppose that wealthier citizens will take their tax cut and stuff it inside their mattress instead of investing it or spending it on goods and services.

Have heard this from people I thought were died-in-the-wool Democrats: Tax cuts should go to those who pay taxes. It's catchy, nearly a slogan, but still not a bumper sticker. Needs work.

I am getting selfish I know, but since we apparently are going to be giving social security benefits and food stamps to Mexicans, I feel that I should demand to have a big tax cut...

so what is my share....married , one teenager at home, one older child with a mild dissability at home, in the 28% bracket, with a very little dividend income..big mortgage, big property taxes...

how much will we see if any????

I feel we are at least as good as Mexicans..

Curious, how much relief will a person who makes say 150,000 get (not that they would need it - just wondering).

And I'm curious, too. How is it that anyone would presume to determine "need" for another?
