I think you mean the E.R.A.

She is credited with almost single-handedly stopping the Equal Rights Amendment from getting passed and like she said, she did it without ever spending a night away from home.

She's a true Iron Butterfly. And I love the way she handbagged (a la Margaret Thatcher) the left-wing callers.

She's a true Iron Butterfly. And I love the way she handbagged (a la Margaret Thatcher) the left-wing callers.

That may be a first. A woman caller who freely admits to the world that she crawled up on the the operating table made for a dog to kill her first child calls me a minion. The next female caller completely loses her composure demonstrating typical feminist anger and bitterness while Mrs. Schlafly never skips a beat and sticks to the facts. She so terrifies the left that even the voices of the liberal men who call in tremble in fear.

She said President Bush's "No Child Left Behind" curriculum omits the 2nd Amendment so that children will not learn it exists unless someone outside the classroom thinks to tell them. Sheesh, can't take your eyes off the Republicans for a second.

CCE's textbook called We the People: the Citizen and the Constitution admits a peculiar aversion to facts: "The primary purpose of this text is not to fill your head with a lot of facts about American history and geography. Knowledge of the facts is important but only insofar as it deepens your understanding of the American Constitutional system and its development."

"Deepens your understanding," that is, of a prescribed worldview without cluttering your mind with hard facts about American history and what is actually in the U.S. Constitution. For example, the fact that the U.S. Constitution contains a Second Amendment doesn't exist in the book called Standards. Many pages of Standards are devoted to the Bill of Rights but, funny thing, the Second Amendment is completely censored out.

I hated her 20 years ago, but I realize she makes a lot of sense now.

She really got rough treatment today, but she stood up to it very graciously.

I especially liked her phonics program and the fact that she feels that parents should teach their children to read before they go to school. I'm beginning to think parents should do just more than teach their kids to read at home. Perhaps just take over their education in all subjects if possible?

She mentioned children's literature in the public schools and the fact that children should be exposed to literature that was written prior to the 1970's. Many public schools refuse to use literature written before 1970 because they think that it's biased, homophobic, etc., etc. (Check out the PABBIS website -- Parents Against Bad Books In School.) She said that not all children are exposed to depression, drugs, sex abuse, whatever, etc., in their private family lives and it's unfair to expect them to respond to such aberrant literature in their classes. I totally agree with this.

I wish she could have been more open about homosexuality and her son (who she's very proud of) because she really got slammed by angry homosexual callers.

And another thing she mentioned -- the armed forces and women in combat.

No real man is going to want to fight along side a woman in combat. Why? Most men are very protective of women and will go out of their way to protect a woman in a bad situation. Woman are a hindrance in combat.

Although the caller was clearly trying to intimate, in a demeaning manner, that Phillis couldn't name any "up and coming" women, I felt immediately that Phillis didn't name anyone because she did not want to slight those she may not identify.

She proved why she is admired by so many.

She so terrifies the left

Phyllis is pretty much a self-made gal. She's not beholden to any liberal, feminist or quota. When she in the middle of the ERA fight she decided that she needed to get a law degree, so she worked part time and got it. She doesn't use the fact that she is a woman as a crutch to get her anywhere.

I remember watching her during the ERA debates. She was amazing, sitting there debating all the shrews and she was the only one at the end who still looked nice and fresh and not like the hang-dog-ugly-feminoids who were so mad at her they could've spit bigtime.

There is even a tape of Phyllis giving Phil Donahue a real run for his money on his show way back. She literally left him speechless. It was priceless.

I thought she handled those questions with poise and grace. You know she loves her son and I'd guess they have a good relationship since she said he works for Eagle Forum. Her telling those interested that she is going to write a book on the subject gives her the opportunity to approach the situation with sensitivity and love and not as a two-sentence sound bite. She has an opportunity for Christian witness and my impression is she wants to handle it correctly and the timing isn't right on a call-in television show.

Donahue speechless?? Amazing! I can hear the sputtering now.... Thanks for the background. The ERA fight was in my pre-politics days so I don't really remember any of it. I do remember seeing her photograph and name in the newspaper. The interview will re-air in its entirety for those missed it at midnight Eastern.

Hi, Gracey,
We're watching it, too. I agree with Mrs. Schlafly's agenda, and I'm afraid that I disagreed with her, too, in the '70's. But, now that I know that legislation often has a 'booby-trap,' I'm glad that the ERA didn't pass.

I knew we wouldn't be home from church and lunch, so I set the recorder for tonight. I wish we had scooted home, so I could have called. Too few of the callers were supportive.

If I knew how to make this forum work better, I'd use huge letters to say,

"God Bless you, Mrs. Schlafly!! You're a Deborah and an inspiration to all of us!!"
