I could be grossly misguided on this, but I've always liked Rangel. He just seems to me someone who's heart is in the right place (like I used to regard Patrick Moynihan), but he just can't advance to the next stage where he sees that he's aligned with the wrong people

Anyway, if Good Time Charlie thinks we need a draft, then dollars to donuts we very probably do.

I'm all for reinstituting the draft if we can exchange that for the increased airport "security" we now have.

Rangle was just busily painting the Republican Party as racist...he can take a flying leap as far as I'm concerned. He is just reading from the clinton talking points.

Agree with you, Paulie. I find Rangel totally off-base a lot of the time now, but I think he started off with good intentions and was not like the rest of the NY pack.

Interesting that he should be the first to make this call. I suspect it's going to have to happen, like it or not.

Here's a partical transcript:

Rangel: As a matter of fact, I'm going to introduce legislation to have universal military service, to have everyone have the opportunity to defend the free world against the threats from the Middle East.

Cong. David Drier: Everybody does have the opportunity ...

Rangel: No no. I'm talking about mandatory. I'm talking about mandatory service.

Wolf Blitzer: So you want to reinstate the draft, is that what you're saying congressman?

Rangel: Exactly. Exactly. I think we've been too cavalier in talking about who we have to teach lessons. We've got 30-35 thousand in South Korea that's exposed to the North Koreans. We've got troops in the Middle East. We've got troops in Europe. And we've got older people in the Congress like myself talkng about what we're not going to tolerate, that we've got to teach them a lesson. I think that if we went home and found out that there're families concerned about their kids going off to war, there'd be more cautiousness, more willingness to work with the international community than to say "our way or the highway."

I heard him say that, too! I was surprised, as were you. Wolf said he thought charlie may have just made some news. LOL! The nuts over at DU are NOT going to like this. They have already been ranting and raving about Lieberman. They hate him, too, because he voted for the Iraq resolution. Thier guy is Kerry - too bad they are too stupid to realize that Kerry voted for the Iraq resolution, too.

The Draft was a big element in previous anti-war activism and civil unrest. Rangel's statement is intended to reintroduce the Draft factor in support of upcoming anti-war activities across the country and the world.

Major anti-war demonstrations, marches, civil unrest, etc are in the works and the Dems are part of it. The Draft threat is a scare tactic.

Well, I'm just glad it was a RAT that first said the draft should be reinstated. This may come back to haunt him with the liberals in his party.

Charlie Rangle is nothing but a fat little, leftist extremist.

Why should all of our young people go off to fight and die, when they would be leaving behind up to 15 million illegal aliens to enjoy America's freedoms, our standard of living, our home towns, jobs, our social services, hospitals, etc etc.

If I was a young person I would tell him and others to shove the draft up their butt. Why should our young people run off to muddy, freezing trenches and and fight, when millions of illegals would be sitting here having a good ol time enjoying America's freedom?

I have already served, and actually join during the Viet Nam war. I am beyond draft age now, but If I wasn't, I would tell the government to stick it until they did their freaking job and either deport or draft the millions of illegal aliens first.

Millions of illegal aliens are sitting here enjoying all the benefits that America has to offer, with no worry of having to fight or take any risk for her, thanks to politicians like Charlie Rangel, and most of the others in DC.

Get drafted and fight for literally millions of illegal aliens that will stay behind? When pigs fly.

It is strange about Chuckie. When I see him talk, he seems almost reasonable. But everything he does furthers the cause of socialism. Wonder what they do to him in the back room?

Rangel was making the point: He's going to reinstitute the draft because right now, wars are fought by the minority poor. He thinks people in Washington (make that PResident Bush), wouldn't be so eager for war if their own children were on the front lines. Clearly racially charged comment.

Blitzer asked for clarification and Rangel said, "yes, I'm going to introduce legislation to reinstate the draft". Let's wait and see if this is for real or just Rangle making another race-baiting point. He's at least more congenial than Hillary and Maxine when he's spewing this stuff.

The Dems are not stupid.

Talking about instituting a draft is a great way for them to energize their base.

Look for anti-draft protests and demonstrations to begin soon. There will NOT be a draft, but the Dems are trying to get to the right of Bush on Foreign Policy.

It's just a ploy, because they know that Bush is untouchable after he wipes out Saddam.

Rangel is an Anti-War socialist. We have enough military personnel using a voluntary system at present. Rangel is just trying to gin up anti-War sentiment by taking this War into every family's living room. The guy is a Socialist, Pacifist appeaser who wants to let Saddam alone.

When President Bush asks for more assistance from Americans to enlist, we'll know that we are getting closer to a possible draft. Until then, we're in good shape.
