I don't know if this is true, but a WW1 veteran told me before he died that while in the trenches one Christmas eve the soldiers (both sides) saw angels over the battle field.

One of my Grandfathers was in that war (WWI)

Even though he was of the American forces, he did tell the tale of the "Soldiers 'Peace' at Christmas"

Even though he was not there when it happened, he always said that he believed it was true
