Republican Senator Joins Call for Lott’s Resignation

The second-highest ranked Republican Senator has joined the growing cry for Trent Lott’s resignation (R-MS) as incoming Senate Majority Leader following his racist remarks last week. Senator Don Nickles (R-OK), currently the assistant Republican leader in the Senate, called for a new election to replace Lott. “I am concerned Senator Lott has been weakened to the point that it may jeopardize his ability to enact our agenda and speak to all Americans,” Nickles said on the ABC News program “This Week.”

Nickles, a staunch anti-abortion conservative who opposed FDA approval of mifepristone, is said to be a likely replacement for Lott. Other possibilities include Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), known for his fight against campaign finance reform and his close ties to the Bush administration; Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN), a more moderate voice who also has close ties to Bush; or Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), one of the Senate’s leading anti-abortion crusaders. Frist, a former physician, is supportive of stem cell research.

While Republicans begin jockeying for the leadership post, Lott has apologized for the remarks he made at retiring Senator Strom Thurmond’s 100th birthday celebration, but has refused thus far to resign. Sometime this week, he plans to make an appearance on Black Entertainment Television to issue yet another apology and explain why he told Thurmond that the country would have been better off if Thurmond had won his presidential race in 1948. Thurmond ran as a segregationist candidate, leading many to argue that Lott was indicating his support for racist policies.

Lott’s most recent racist remarks are only the latest in his history in politics. In 1980, he made similar remarks at a campaign rally for Ronald Reagan, saying “You know, if we had elected this man 30 years ago, we wouldn’t be in the mess we are today,” according to CNN. A statement issued by Lott’s office asserts that this remark was taken out of context, CNN reports. As House Republican Whip in 1981, Lott filed an amicus brief on behalf of Bob Jones University, arguing that the school’s racial discrimination in banning interracial dating should not affect their tax-exempt status, according to the Associated Press.

In Congress, Lott is firmly against women’s reproductive rights, and is putting the so-called “partial birth” abortion ban at the top of his agenda in January. The phrase “partial-birth” abortion is an inaccurate and inflammatory term invented by the right wing. “Partial birth” abortion does not refer to any particular medical procedure and the term is not recognized in the medical community, according to the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Abortion procedure bans such as these aim to outlaw or significantly chip away at a woman’s right to choose a safe and legal medical procedure.

The GOP appears to be the party of cowards and Lott used to be one of their leaders.

What was it that Lott stood up for that you found to be "right and good"? Do you believe it would have been "right and good" for Strom Thurmond to have been elected President in 1948 on the Dixiecrat platform. Kindly provide a yes or no answer.

It's amazing that nearly all the Demos put their body on the line to defend one of their own (Bill Clinton, remember him?) when he did wrong. By comparison, the cowardly Republicans, ran away, went into hiding and, eventually, joined the stone-throwers when Lott did... nothing.

Will the GOP and its members learn anything following this episode? Well... they are also known as 'the stupid party'. And W is their leader.

Yes, I do. Possible a lot better than having Truman. And we could have avoided at least some of the problems we had to live with ever since. Such as Socialism as state ideology, though crime legislation, affirmative action and race-based quotas, the nearly complete destruction of our cities, the foreign invasion, multilingual America, the lowering of the national IQ average and the future collapse of our entire society and political structures.

Would all these disasters happen if Strom was prez? We'll never know. Will we?

Thank you for clearly stating that you believe it would have been better for our country for Strom Thurmond to have been elected President in 1948 on a platform that called for employing the power of the state to enforce segregation.

I believe that all your future statements can and should be judged in light of this information.

Dirty Little Secret # 114: the majority of newsstand copies of Ms. Magazine are returned to the publisher unbought each month. Ms. Magazine survives only through the donations of several wealthy man-hating Marxists.

the Ms analysis makes no sense. Therefore, basing a now moot argument for keeping Lott on it is similarly senseless.

Ms assumed that Lott would have been replaced by the equally pro life Nickles. So there would have been no gain to them on the partial birth question.

It might be argued now that Frist is more pro choice and, therefore, less likely to ban paritial birth abortions.

However, in 1999, Frist voted IN FAVOR of a partial birth abortion ban.

http://www.nrlc.org/news/1999/NRL1199/voteroe.html

Accordingly, there is no real evidence that instaling Frist as SML will hurt the chances of a ban on partial birth abortions.

The only real gain to the Dems, the libs, the feminazis, etc., on Lott was to have Lott try to hang on as long as possible until he was so damaged that he had no choice by to resign from the Senate completely. By resigning the leadership, but not the Senate, Lott has effectively neutralized this plan.

So... according to this article, Lott wanted Reagan elected in 1950. And by implication, the writer is saying that Reagan was a racist. Or... the writer of this article didn't learn much last year at the campus newspaper.

The phrase “partial-birth” abortion is an inaccurate and inflammatory term invented by the right wing.

With this, I agree - - the baby is not "partially" born, but is nearly all the way born except for the top of its head when the surgical scissors are implanted into the base of the skull prior to the brain being sucked out and the skull collapsed.

If this isn't the first thing on the table then 2004 Bush can go back to Teaxas for all I care!

In Congress, Lott is firmly against women’s reproductive rights, and is putting the so-called “partial birth” abortion ban at the top of his agenda in January.

Strange way to put it.... So you think women have "reproductive rights" that include murdering another person with a beating heart who happens to be starting life and growing in a woman's womb?
