Nearly 40 percent of whites interviewed in Detroit, Boston, and Atlanta said they would move if their neighborhoods became more racially integrated, according to a study released Thursday.

Fear of declining property values and a jump in crime were the main reasons whites gave for wanting to move out of increasingly integrated neighborhoods, according to the study, which is in the November issue of the journal Demographics.

But Dan Krichbaum, the executive director of the Michigan office of the National Conference for Community and Justice, said: "It is embarrassing for many whites who have these opinions and it obviously comes from their insecurities and the fact that their experiences are so limited with people from other racial and ethnic groups."

White residents were shown four cards representing 15-house neighborhoods with 7 percent, 20 percent, 33 percent and 53 percent black residents.

Its not embarassing to me to want a neighborhood that is relatively crime free, has decent schools, and to not feel targeted by youth gangs. Unfortunately, these seem to be correlated with neighborhoods that have a high black population. I don't think that acting on the basis of experience and observation is prejudice. To the contrary, acting a certain way in spite of experience is wishful thinking--which is a prejudice to observed facts.

As Thomas Sowell says, and you point out, it is culture that is the problem, not skin color.

Having lived in the Detroit suburbs for years, I can attest these are genuine fears - and for good reasons - so people long ago took the painful lessons to heart. It seems like these were the end results in many neighborhoods that went black. Almost the entire city of Detroit is a good example. The city, which used to be one of the nicest in the country, is now a low rent wall-to-wall crime zone ruled by a corrupt and racist government in which the minority whites are often treated poorly.

It's not "blacks". It's the culture; crime, ubiquitous drugs, corruption, welfare mentality and in-your-face racist attitude a lot of blacks bring with them. Few whites want to risk their lives or fortunes getting close to this demolished culture. This is most unfortunate as the decent blacks usually get tarnished by the widespread awful reputations of the bad ones.

I'd be surprised it the percentage were that low. The personal guilt and stigma regarding such an admission is now wotse than admitting one is homosexual. The reality lies in behavior. When black move in, white people vote with their feet while venturing evase explanations. I've seen entire counties vacated by white flight.

People are stupid, I would have refused to answer this obviously devisive poll because it isn't color that matters!

The issue for me would be, I would move out of any neighborhood where property values were going in the tank because low class idiots were moving in.

I would have no problem living in a highly integrated neighborhood if they were educated, god-fearing people!

Sometimes. Here in Prince George's County, Maryland it may be a richer neighborhood than I live in. (and we're not the only household around here that might have a six figure income.)

Successful rich blacks do not live in black neighborhoods - because there are none that they can abide. I'm sure that they would love to do so, but they cannot.

What?? You mean the endless multicultural diversity-worshipping mantra ISN'T WORKING?? That's hilarious!

Personally, it would depend entirely on WHAT KIND of *racials* moved in....if it was the Maxine Waters/Cynthia McKinney types, I'd leave. Dittos if it was Clintons, Carvilles, and Hollyweirds.

If it was the Walter Williams/Larry Elder types, I'd invite them to dinner every night.

All depends on the quality of the person and nothing more. I'd love to know how the questions were framed.
