I'm saving too. I'm looking for any Levin comments from Thurmond's party...found this from September (are you sure you don't have yout Stomfests mixed? it's getting really easy with the feeding frenzy going on):

Well, then, what are we to make of Democrat Senator Carl Levin's September 24th praise of Thurmond? Among other things, Levin said, " ... I am pleased to join my colleagues in paying tribute to Senator Strom Thurmond and honoring him for his unparalleled record of public service to this Nation." And then a few sentences later, Levin says, "In 1948, while he was still Governor, [Thurmond] ran for President as a State's Right Democrat and received 39 electoral votes, the third best showing by an independent candidate in U.S. history."

From the NRO Selective Moral Outrage, Part II

The whole commentary is really worth the read...and I'm saving it to upload tomorrow.

Agreed, Lott needs to quit apologizing...he digs himself a deeper grave every time he does it. And further agreed, he should wait six months and then quietly step down as majority leader...he has ALWAYS been awful at it. "Leader" when used in the context of Lott has always been an oxymoron.

GSC has impressed me with his ability to divine that which is unknowable.

"Maxine Waters once said that the people rioting in LA should quit doing so in their own neighborhoods,.. and they should go to white neighborhoods"..

And they took her advise and decided to go into the Korean neighborhood. Big mistake. Some got got their a$$es shot off and others decided it wasn't worth it, as many Koreans openly displayed their arms. Going into white areas would have proved to be even more regrettable for them.

Whites can be very patient and forgiving. But when if comes to events like that, the can be the meanest SOBs on the planet.

Oh, and Waters is a card carrying racist, but she is routinely tolerated and ignored by the media.

Please show me the quote where Lott said those words: "electing a segregationist'. I really believe that he mis-spoke & was trying to praise a 100 year old....he goofed...big time....but I don't think he said those words.

BTW was Byrd a bigot when he belonged to the KKK? To me that is far worse than anything Lott has ever said.

The media is working with the DNC to try to destroy the GOP's chances with the Black community.

Lott should resign the leadership only if Byrd is also censored for his membership in the KKK! Clinton did far worse than Lott.....lied under oath & broke his Oath of Office.....he never resigned & neither should Lott!

On Larry King, Lott said this when asked "Do you think Thurmond would have been a better president than Truman?": You know, I'd have to go back and look at the election of that year. Harry Truman obviously did a lot of great things for our country, and, you know, I was trying to remember who the Republican nominee was..." Bzzzztt... the correct answer for non-segregationists is "No. Thurmond was a segregationist." Sorry, you lose, and you don't get the home game either.

Lott in 1980: "You know, if we had elected this man 30 years ago [back when he was a bigoted Dixiecrat], we wouldn't be in the mess we are today."

Julie, what if he'd have been talking about George Wallace or Lester Maddox and not Strom Thurmond (all three of which got honorary degrees from the bigoted Bob Jones University) or Bull Connor? What would you infer? You'd infer that the person speaking endorsed the racist views of those people at that time in those people's lives (since that was the reason for their notoriety). These Dixiecrats returned to the Democrat Party after Truman was gone so they could fight against civil rights legislation from the majority party in Congress.

Byrd was a bigot when he was with the KKK. He's probably still one. Being in the KKK is far worse.

The media is mostly just reporting the facts of Lott's record on race issues.

You're kidding. If this is so then his status must be elevated from "chief compromiser" to "pompous fool."

I look across and see people I formerly admired standing alongside Maxine Waters.

That cuts both ways, of course, which just goes to show this is not a partisan issue. Looks to me like I'm standing with Tom Sowell and Peggy Noonan and Michelle Malkin and National Review, and you're standing with Bob Herbert and Little Tom Daschle and Jumping Jim Jeffords.

I wish to God Republicans would get past their dislike of Lott and move on to the bigger issue here- responding to absolutely ridiculous charges from liberals. If any of you who think this will end if Lott resigns, you have another thing coming because they are going to go after every single Republican nominated from here on out.

This isn't about a stupid comment from Lott.

This isn't about getting a majority leader with a spine, as some have said.

This is about standing up for what is right. And by wanting Lott to resign, every single one of you are playing into Democrat hands.

This is about EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN growing a spine and fighting back against absolutely baseless and false allegations from a corrupt group of liberals who can not face the reality of a Republican majority. The stereotype against Republicans will not change until we challenge them, and set the record straight.

Now those of you who dislike Lott can ride this issue to Lott's demise. But I for one am not going to let the Democrats continue to foster the completely false stereotype that Republicans are racist.

I want him to remain in the Senate with the condition that all Republicans begin to challenge the bullshit that the Democrats have been spewing for the past 20 years.

But make no mistake. If Lott resigns, he might as well put on a white hood because it will appear to be an admittion of being a racist. This is far more complex than Lott being inept. And it pisses me off that so few Republicans don't see it.

It is rare that I agree with you, but I do on this one. However, I wish Bush would have showed some spine and loyalty and backed up a friend and compatriot instead of throwing him to the wolves.

You put one heal in the horseshoe-shaped part, and all your weight on the other foot stepping with toe on the lower part, and you yank your foot up out of the boot with the heel in the horseshoe part. It's just sad that you yanks have been huffing and puffing and contorting all these years to remove your boots...
