Frist is no dixiecrat. He and Rove are compadre's.

Also, Frist was a major engineer of Gore's loss in Tennessee.....the place where Al Gore REALLY lost the election.

The call from the left, of course, will switch to trying to get Lott to step down completely -- that ain't their call; only the people who put him there in the first place (i.e. the voters) should do that, IMO.

Management 101: Executives who are demoted leave the company.

Dubya was really on the beam, and his speech was smokin', the audience with him...then he eases into his repudiation of CheerleaderMan and it was like a rocket taking off.

T'was a flippin' joy to see him take the reins in hand and, a firm and stern hand it is.

I was impressed, not just by that, but what he had to say re: the faith-based initiative after those remarks.

Dubya's the man, no doubt.

This will be what people remember about this episode, more than Lott's incipient stupidity , more than the Dims' ceaseless carping and whining and crayfishin' around to get their hooks into Dubya.

Being mean spirited, if I were Lott, I would resign from the senate and tell Bush and his other republican friends where to go.

I'm questioning the hypocrisy of selective moral outrage by the Left.

This is all too true. The problem is that with the media on their side, they're never going to be called to account for this.

In general, however, I think that historical "gotcha's" are ridiculous for either side. Lott was 7 years old at the time of Strom Thurmond's run, and Strom has by now become nothing but a sort of SC mascot, so I really don't think he meant anything by it - much less than Robert Byrd meant by joining the Klan, for example, something for which to my knowledge, he has never apologized.

That said, I think the Republicans should get creative and pick somebody like Kay Bailey.

This would sure shut their (Dem) mouths. She'd need a bit coaching, I suspect, but I think she's loyal and, from the admittedly little I've seen, capable. It's time for new blood, in any case. Blood with no baggage, so to speak.

Oh, one more thing; if Cave-A-Lott goes all the way down, guess who once again becomes third in the Presidential line of succession?

Robert "Grand Kleagle" Byrd

Your point is VERY well taken. But if the Democrats could make Trent Lott's "states rights" comment seem so controversial, think what they could do if someone else from the (beloved) Southern independence movement took over? 2004 could be a real mess...

Good question. When Lott said we'd be better of today if Thurmond had been elected President, I took it to mean that Thurmond had a strong stance on defense and immigration, which would have certainly helped us in our current war on terrorism. But I just don't know what Thurmond's platform was. This inquiring mind wants to know as well.

So? Isn't it more important to get Lott out than have the Dems take over the Senate? Isn't it more important for the Republicans to remove any HINT of impropriety? So we lose the Senate, so what? At least we can say we stood on the right side. We can trust the Democrats to give us a fair shake.

Better to lose the Senate than to have even the suspicion of a possible racist on the Republican side.

Looks like Rove and the RNC is trying to see if this will put out the forest fire.

>>>YEP THE RATS STRIKE AGAIN!<<<

They really have done a lot with a little on this one. Where's proof that Lott's states rights agenda has been racist, after all... It's not really there.

Do you really want nothing done on the economy/home security/SocSecurity/defense for the next 2 years, and only a further dismantling of this country come Jan. 20, 2005 as the RATs get a clean sweep on the basis of their obstruction? If so, don't wait for the door to open on your way out.

Perhaps the leaders of the party should be telling Lott these things privately...

If the leaders of your party are calling you a racist, you do what I would do:

You tell them to go to hell as you walk out the door.

Newt quit, Livingston quit, and, if Lott is forced out, all you will see of him is elbows, shoesoles, and a**hole as he vanishes in the distance.

Management 101: Executives who are demoted leave the company.

The difference is that in business there's always some other company to ship off to. Trent's not going anywhere. He'll get shuffled back into the deck and cling to his seat the way a barnacle sticks to a rock.

The Republicans need a tough guy in that position, and Mitch McConnell may be the go to guy. And as a bonus he is married to a minority. - Tom
