Poll: Canadians Sour On U.S.

Majority thinks relations have deteriorated over past year

Ottawa – A majority of Canadians believe relations between Ottawa and Washington have deteriorated over the past year.

The Toronto Star/CBC/La Presse poll done by EKOS Research found 52 per cent of respondents agreed that Canada-U.S. relations are worse than they were a year ago, while 38 per cent felt they had stayed the same and only 7 per cent felt they had improved.

The poll was released as Deputy Prime Minister John Manley and Tom Ridge, head of the homeland security department in the U.S., met yesterday in Washington to discuss Canadian concerns about immigration controls south of the border, which Ottawa believes unfairly target some Canadian citizens.

Almost two-thirds of respondents, 65 per cent, also told EKOS they believed the U.S. had "no business" telling Canadians to increase defence spending or pushing Ottawa to back Washington's hawkish foreign policy, both of which are matters for Canadians to decide themselves. Thirty-one per cent said they felt it "reasonable" for Washington to request Canada's military support, backed by a more robust military.

They believe Canadian interests could be put at risk by ignoring the requests from Washington.

"There is a great deal of ambivalence and ambiguity in Canadians minds," EKOS President Frank Graves said. "It appears having something less than the most idyllic relations with the United States is not necessarily seen as a bad thing."

EKOS interviewed 1,205 Canadians 18 years and older between Monday and Wednesday this week and said the results are accurate within plus-or-minus 2.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Canadian views of U.S. President George W. Bush were distilled in a single question posed by EKOS, which asked whether Bush or Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein posed a bigger threat to world peace.

While 56 per cent of respondents said it was the Iraqi leader, 38 per cent said it was Bush.

Graves said the numbers did not necessarily indicate Canadians felt the U.S. president was "evil," but it was a perception that, as the leader of the world's only "hyper-power," the American leader has more firepower at his disposal than ever before.

"His missteps or miscalculations can have far more catastrophic calculations than nutty or evil Saddam Hussein," Graves said.

"A good portion of Canadians wouldn't agree with the characterization that he is a moron, but they do think he is dangerous."

Let's see if I have this straight, it's Canadians' business how we screen people entering the U.S. but it's none of Americans' business how or if Canada contributes to our mutual defense.

SAY WHAT?

The Canadians are now closer to Europe than the U.S. Soft with Socialism they want us to protect them but they want to be sure to tell us how. Many in the U.S. think Canada is much like the U.S. Not so. Ask someone who has visited.
We need to let our foreign friends fend for themselves for a while. Their military is not much stronger than the New York City police.

Who the H#ll are they polling??? It's gotta be Toronto and Ottawa. Certainly not out West. A bunch of bull if you ask me. The reason it has deteriorated is because Chretien is such an ass!

These numbers are skewed. I know from experience that a majority of Canadians are in Palm Springs for the winter.

I put the Canadians in the same category as the Eurotrash--they don't like us until they need us. I despise the fact that my Mercury was made in Canada.

Just continue to drain them of all doctors and other [mostly white] professionals. Keep their currency headed south, no pun intended. Leave them just a bunch of French and Indians, no pun intended. Seal the border.

If any complaints are heard, just say they are 40 years behind us, 20 degrees below zero, and ten miles beneath contempt.

We should make a trade with the Canucks. We get Alberta (and any other Freedom-minded provinces), they get the liberal parts of our northeastern states.

I'm European by birth and American by choice and I agree with your Eurotrash assesment of Canadians.

While a few of Canadians still like the US, most have joined the European anti-US crowd out of envy and spite. Its not just envy. Its the rampant socialist attitude that is inherantly anti-US and anti-capitalist. Most Canadians are lefties who want big government to take care of them from cradle to grave.

Its sad actually.

The Toronto Star is an explicitly socialist organ, FWIW.

Why don't we sent St. Paul BSA Troop 45 across the border
and take over the joint. It shouldn't take those boys
but a few days.

No. Just close the border. Let them stew in there own juices for awhile. They reap the benefit of our military and don't help pay the bill just like the Europeans. They think the long peace they've had is due to their own efforts through diplomacy and not their neighbor's military strength. They're all freeloaders that have gotten use to it. Now they think it's their birthright.

They say we should have no say on there internal actions so let them have no say on our internal actions. Close the border now.

Time for a little reality to enlighten our "friends".

Understood. But, hang tough.

Advancing technlogy may well make larger areas of Canada inhabitable. I, for one, am always looking for an emigration solution.

If I could get 1,000 acres and a solar generator setup....

Annex Canada, deport all socialist inhabitants to Europe and launch a settlement campaign to exploit the resources.

Heck, I bet the cast of "Law and Order" is stronger than their military.
