Life prison for vicious farm attacker Jabulani Zuma
December 3, 2002 - By Bob Frean - Pietermaritzburg: 26-year-old Jabulani Zuma, convicted of the murder of a Wartburg farming couple, the attack against the Skinner farm and looting the home of an Indian couple, the Kharodias in Greytown -- while he had been allowed out of jail on parole -- was yesterday sentenced to spend the rest of his life in jail. He was given two concurrent life terms in prison for the killings.

Jabulani Zama, convicted of the murders of Robin and Joan Dent, "should spend the rest of his life in jail," Judge Leona Theron said when sentencing him in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

Theron sentenced Zuma to two life terms for their murders plus 82 years for two  farm attacks -- against the Dents and also his targetting of the farm of Roderick and Maria Skinner near Greytown. He also was sentenced for breaking and entering the home of an Indian couple -- Cassim and Lakpaphy Kharodia in Greytown, in April, and robbing them of a vehicle, jewellery and other items. He also was sentenced for one count of kidnapping and for unlawfully possessing an military R4 assault rifle.

Zuma, already had three previous convictions against him -- but still was allowed out on parole -- and during which he carried out all these heinous crimes. He had planned the farm attacks with meticulous precision together with fellow inmates in prison, the judge noted in her summary.

Hanging is the only deterrent -- son
A bereaved son, Rob Dent, said that hanging would be the only deterrent for murderers. "A life sentence does not deter many criminals released from jail. They have no money and feel they have nothing to lose if they are convicted again because they return to a life where they get food and are able to watch TV in jail."

In terms of correctional services regulations, all these sentences will run concurrently with the life term.

Judge would do all she could to prevent Zuma's release:
The judge said that ordinarily a life sentence did not mean the offender should spend the rest of his life in jail. She would do all she could to prevent Zuma's release after serving a certain period. She said that "he was a menace to society and there was only a remote, if any prospect of rehabilitation."

Zuma shows no remorse for cold-blooded killings of Dent couple - judge:
She said the attacks on the Dents were "brutal, cold-blooded and vicious, yet Zuma had not shown an iota of remorse - and despite overwhelming evidence of his guilt he maintained his innocence.

Zuma was given 15 years for breaking into the home of Roderick and Maria Skinner on Westwood Farm, Greytown, assaulting them and robbing them of guns and other items in March this year.

He was also given 15 years for breaking into the home of Cassim and Lakpaphy Kharodia in Greytown, in April, and robbing them of a vehicle, jewellery and other items.

The Dent murders, kidnapping and robbery took place in June.
For robbing the Dents he was given 25 years, and 12 years for the kidnap.
He was sentenced to 15 years for the illegal possession of an R4 rifle.
Theron refused him leave to appeal against his convictions and sentence.
