England has worst crime rate in world
Telegraph, U.K. ^ | 01/12/2002 | David Bamber

England and Wales have the highest crime rate among the world's leading economies, according to a new report by the United Nations.

The survey, which is likely to prove embarrassing to David Blunkett, the Home Secretary. shows that people are more likely to be mugged, burgled, robbed or assaulted here than in America, Germany, Russia, South Africa or any other of the world's 20 largest nations. Only the Dominican Republic, New Zealand and Finland have higher crime rates than England and Wales.

According to the comparison of international crime statistics produced by the UN's Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention, England and Wales had 9,766 crimes for every 100,000 people in the year 2000. America had 8,517, South Africa 7,997, Germany 7,621 and Russia 2,022.

During the period 1998-2000, Britain went from fifth to fourth worst in the world league table. An analysis of total recorded crime figures before 1998 also suggests that England and Wales have moved sharply up the league table since Labour came to power in 1997. Crimes fell from 5.5 million in 1993 to 4.5 million in 1997. By 1999, total crimes had risen again to 5.3 million.

Last night Oliver Letwin, the shadow home secretary, said: "This does rather blow a hole in David Blunkett's claim that New Labour has crime under control. It is a damning picture."

The UN reports also shows that England and Wales are the second-worst places in the world for assaults, with 851 people assaulted per 100,000, and seventh for burglaries and car theft, with 1,579 burglaries per 100,000 population.

Criminologists believe that a note of caution needs to be introduced into analysis of the data, because of the different ways in which UN member countries record crimes.

A Home Office spokesman said that officials had not yet seen the report and so could not comment.

Hmph. They probably were "encouraged" to play the game in exchange for Clinton adding 100,000 to the country's police forces.

And isn't Australia's crime rate increasing by leaps and bounds now that they have outlawed private ownership of firearms?

"Not only is crime up in England, the criminals are bolder. 53% of burgaries in England occur while the vicim is at home. By contrast, only 13% of US burglars strike while the victim is at home."

I'd like to use your statistics the next time I write my gun grabbing elected officials, but I'd like to quote the source. Your source is?

I'll look for it tomorrow -- I'm headed to bed.

South Africa and Russia have less crime per person than America and Britain? I'm not buying it. These statistics must be flawed.

Of course, the statistics for America and Britain might be basically accurate.

I don't know where he gets his statistics, but the best place to look is the GOA fact sheet on the web (it's huge).

You can also search the web for crime statistics, look specifically for "hot" burglaries (that's when someone is home at the time of the burglary)

I'm only talking about illegal aliens of Hispanic descent. If they are here legally this most likely doesn't apply.

But it is true, if the illegal alien commits a crime, all official paperwork will classify the criminal as white. But if the victim is an illegal alien, then all official paperwork classifies the person as Hispanic and not white.

Good observation. Statistics might be right, but how they are taken can sure lead to some misleading conclusions.

Therefore - "Resistance is futile."

Sounds like a line in either an old SciFi or War movie.

Then, again, truth is stranger than fiction.

The linked article by Dave Kopel mentions the "burglary gap", but doesn't reference a source. I've seen it several times, but this is the only one I can put my hands on at the moment. Maybe Kopel can provide the reference.

Here's another mention of the topic, by John Lott. Again, the data source is not given, but Lott is a very thorough researcher. Try his book, "More Guns, Less Crime."

Or, as xm177e2 suggests, search the web for "hot burglaries" (the Lott article was the result of a Google search.)

Thanks for reminding me that the GOA is a great source of gun stats. Been a while since I've been there.

Thanks for the links for gun/crime facts.

hmmm... I have never heard of "hot burglaries" before. Thanks for that too :)

I think I will do a Google search & see what turns up.

Little Johnny was in his Kindergarten class when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came up - fireman, policeman, salesman.

Johnny was being uncharacteristically quiet, and so the teacher asked him about his father.

"My father's an exotic dancer in a gay cabaret and takes off all his clothes in front of other men."

The teacher hurriedly set the other children to work on some colouring in and took little Johnny aside to ask him "Is that really true about your father working in a gay strip club?"

"No," said Johnny, "he really plays test cricket for England but I was too embarrassed to say."

[,,, telling that one wouldn't make me a criminal, would it?]

No one knows what the effect of immigration has had on crime as it is now a 'thought-crime' to say or think anything bad about a person of an ethnic background. Therefore anyone who tries to research this is commiting a crime. George Orwells prophecy has come true.

I just got back from england, lived in Reading, Berkshire for 3 months and I do have to tell you, statistics say that in Reading there is less crime, and it has fallen by 2%. Now, I'm not sure who is telling what, and whomever wants to bullshit then I guess we don't have much choice in the matter. The only way to know anything is to go and do our own research. Now as for some crimes, which are everywhere and anywhere, no matter who you are, we can't just assume that just because something happend to us over seas that this is something to be expected. I lived in Reading for 3 months and felt safer than anywhere that i have ever lived, even compared to my own country; i felt safe leaving my home and going about town on my own (of course, when it's late you want to make sure you are with someone, it's common sense for anyone don't you think?)
and even safer in my home in Reading. I had a great experience, and would I go back? Yes! I would even consider living in Reading, but of course, that wouldn't be a simple solution where immigration is concerned, etc.
It doesn't matter where we live, crime is there and it will always be there. I just found it to be a much better place in Reading and I have enjoyed it so much and have never had a problem there, or in London (I advise everyone to get familiar with the London boroughs and know where the safer areas are, for instance, I would stay away from Hackney and Southwark. I guess we all have the unfortunate situation where we will be in contact with some kind of crime, sometime in our lives. My own mother, who has lived in the same house for over 20 years, in the same neighborhood for over 30 years, has been mugged, a thug went up to her and grabbed her purse, and ran back into the car and drove away. We also have been robbed a few years ago, while we were all at work and came home to find our home all messed up and they stole the television, vcr, jewelery, etc....just the thought of having someone go through our personal items and in our house was distrubing enough...and this was done in the middle of the day, SO MUCH FOR KNOWING YOUR NEIGHBORS THESE DAYS!!!!!!!!
Just last year, I had someone come to my door, early in the morning asking me if we have an apartment for rent, the funny thing is we didn't and this man just came and knocked on the door, 8:00a.m. in the morning. It is obvious that this was some kind of joke and this man was trying to rob us, and who knows what else. Another day, just a week or so later, we had some other man come to the door and ask me if I knew anything about the disease of the black man, meaning hypertension..and i said I wasn't interested. He took his time leaving the building and when he reached out side he knew I was going to look at him to see his face, but he looked elsewhere, and walked away. From the description the police had he had a newspaper wrapped around his hand, meaning he had a gun, or a knife under there. Well, my neighbors are as blind as a new born baby, they couldn't care less about anything, and then they wonder why there is so much crime in their area? We are so blind to everything, and I have been one to stress the importance of locking your doors, even in the daytime as you go out to the garden, etc...you never know! It doesn't hurt to look out your window to see if you notice anything strange, you should make a habit of recognizing your neighbors, etc. I prefer England because I just felt safer there and I knew that I wanted to live there as well. I thought the people were amazingly friendly, kind, and very polite. I guess to each is own.
