Saudi students at American schools are being told to buckle down, and not just to get good grades. Why? Because Saudi bigwigs fear that if a kid does anything to warrant attention from terrorist-obsessed lawmen, he'll be deported. Considering the new scrutiny of Saudi Arabia's help–or not–in the antiterrorism war, maybe a bit of paranoia is warranted from Riyadh. The Saudi Embassy sent a warning advising students to do everything from completing their homework to obeying traffic lights. "Skipping classes," said the memo provided to Whispers, can lead to "deportation." Also: Don't be a lazy student, and "respect traffic regulations and . . . evade traffic tickets or warnings and especially parking tickets." And don't even joke on the phone or in E-mail, said the embassy. "Anything said unintentionally may be taken seriously or misinterpreted." But most important, don't leave the country "until the picture is clearer, for many of your fellow students who had left for the summer back to Saudi Arabia had difficulties re-entering the United States."

Seeing as how a few of our fellow countrymen slaughtered a few thousand American citizens in a cowardly fashion, you are all going to have to straighten out your acts.

That means that if you are officially here to study, you'll now actually have to do so. I realize this will be a hardship. Even more shockingly, you'll need to obey the laws! Daddy's money or passport won't help anymore. It may keep you out of the can, but it can't keep you in the country. From now on, if you flout the local authorities, the party will be over.

It's actually quite easy to figure out what you'll have to do. Just imagine if you were an American student in Riyadh. Whatever he couldn't do there, you can't do here.

O.K. That's not quite true. You can still go dancing, date the local girls, have a drink (if you're over 21), etc. But just imagine what would happen to the American kid in Mecca if he piled up a few parking tickets, or got drunk and told a local cop to stuff it. You'll have it easy; you'll only get deported. As opposed to getting the shit beat out of you.

So, no more acting like you're a superior being from a superior culture.
