How accurate is Suetonius? And what's your verdict on the Romans? I can respect their belief in law and their role in spreading civilization, but if they were as bad as Suetonius says, it's hard not to have some mistrust and dislike for them.

Hmmm, interesting. I'm not as familiar as I should be with Livy, ect, so I'm probably not qualified to say how accurate he was. A lot of what he says seems tabloid-esque, but as we've seen in the last administration, that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't true.

Suppose we made a Kennedy emperor. The results would be very unpretty. I don't know how much of that could be taken to represent the civilization as a whole. Maybe you could assign blame for failing to throw off the debased emperors, but considering what Rome went through before Julius took over, and between Julius and Augustus, an aversion to civil conflict is understandable.

Glad to see you'll continue, AJ--though I'm suprised to see that you've left out Aurelius, Plato, and Xenophon.

Remember that it's very partial and sporadic.

I had forgotten to check Appian--he does give a longer account of Antony's speech than Plutarch does, with some sentences in direct quotation (Civil Wars, Book II, sections 144-146). I don't know if Shakespeare had access to Appian in a language he could read--there doesn't seem to be a close correspondence between Appian's version and Shakespeare's. How close Appian's version is to what Antony actually said at Caesar's funeral is another question.

Good to see you back. The old dogs around here appreciate and look forward to your efforts; historical literacy is one of the strongest[along with economic literacy]counters against all forms of commie/liberal agitprop and sleazy leftist psycho-babble.
