I still think we're making nice with the Saudis just until we don't need them as much anymore...like when we can install a democratic government in Iraq. I think that's why the Bush Administration is sticking up for them in public.

Their number one loyalty is to themselves, even at the expense of the Muslim world. That is made obvious by the way that they run that country of theirs. And in the end they know that the only thing keeping them in power is the threat of US military force, and that means the oil must flow.

Say what you want about this "deal with the Devil" that the Saudi's are playing out, but the oil has always flowed, no matter what. That says all that anyone should need to know about the Saudis and their loyalties.

All of this Saudi bashing does more harm than good. The Saudis have helped us quietly over several decades in achieving our foreign policy goals in the region, including poroviding funding. They live in a dangerous neighborhood. They have paid protection money to escape the terrorist and regime changing attacks, which have been endemic in the arab world. Also, as the custodian of the two holy mosques and the religious home of Islam, Saudi Arabia's actions are circumscribed by that responsibility.

Saudi Arabia has approximately two-thirds of the world's proven oil reserves and an even greater percentage of the world's exportable oil,i.e., beyond domestic consumption. They can pump 10 million bbls. per day for the next hundred years. The world's economy depends on this oil regardless of whether we reduce our dependence on Saudi oil or not. All oil is fungibile.

What we do not want to do is to demonize the Saudi leadership like we did the Shah of Iran and wind up with something far worse. There is no doubt that Saudi money has found its way into al-Qeada, but I don't believe it is being done knowingly. I wonder how much of the money the USG gives to Arafat and the PLO goes to funding terrorism.

We would have been wise to have heeded George Washington's words about foreign entanglements - whether it's Saudi Arabia, Israel, Russia, Venezuela, Colombia, etc. etc. This is all going to get worse before it gets better and any one who believes the government will keep our nation safe might want to re-think things. It is our government which has gotten our nation into this mess.

No. Revenge is a dish best eaten cold. Bush should attack Iraq first. Once it is occupied and reasonably stable, then we have no use, or need for, the Saudi bases. Then we have leverage (the credible threat of destroying Saudi Arabia and/or taking their oil fields) to get the Saudis to do our bidding or suffer the consequences. All that said, I hope these events happen sooner rather than later.

There are many of us here who support Bush, but disagree with him from time to time. Especially on this issue. Bush is behind the public on this, and had better catch up quick, or he WILL BE LEFT BEHIND FOR GOOD. (See GHWB) Of course we don't get cute nicknames like Bush-Bots.

Alwaleed is the same prince who tried to donate $10 million to the Twin Towers Fund after the Sept. 11 attacks but was refused by then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani because the donation came with a letter saying America "should re-examine its policies in the Middle East and adopt a more balanced stance toward the Palestinian cause."
