Pentagon-AP -- U-S troops in Afghanistan are shifting focus from military matters to humanitarian missions.
Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria Clarke says U-S forces are helping to rebuild a roadway that will improve trade in the region. She says American forces are offering free health care in some areas. And a veterinary unit is helping farmers with their livestock.
There are eight-thousand U-S troops in Afghanistan. Some, scouring the eastern regions for remnants of al-Qaida and Taliban fighters, will continue their work while others shift focus elsewhere.
Clarke said today that American forces have rebuilt 23-hundred miles of roads as part of the 835 (m) million dollars the U-S has spent in assistance over the past year. Schools and water systems have also been repaired.
