A Veterans Day Tribute
November, 2002 | Evelyn Dorrity

Posted on 11/17/2002 1:04:08 PM PST by Noumenon

My daughter, a 15 year old 10th grader was recently given a class assignment to make a presentation on the meaning of Veterans Day. This is what she produced.

A Veterans Day Tribute

Warning: This is about 25MB in size and 6:59 in length. Might take a while to get it downloaded, but its worth it.

We've been doing our best to raise our twins to be philosophers, warriors and soverign individuals. Every now and then, we gets the message that we're Doing the Right Thing.

Evie did this herself - she got some pointers to source material and some minimal production assistance, but that's all.

I'd say that she Gets It bigtime, don't you?

Bigtime, you bet!

I assume she will be graded on the project, I hope she allows you to share that with Freepers as well.

Evie got an A+ on the presentation. Better still, it was shown to the entire school on Veterans Day, and the principal stated that it was the most professional treament of the subject by a student that he had seen in his years of teaching.

Even better still, on the way home from school that day, Evie mentioned that for the first time, something she'd done had made people think. She was more proud of that accomplishment than she was for the grade she received.

That's the brass ring, folks. That's the toughest thing of all to accomplish in this world today, and it's a mark of true warriorship. As Evie was putting this program together, she asked for my help in coming up with as suitable ending. I suggested that she take some time to emphasize just for what these succeeding generations of vets fought and in some cases sacrified their lives. Evie already understood that the vets had fought for freeedom - well and good. But I suggested that a lot of folks didn't really understand just what freedom was all about - think about your classmates, I said. How many of them really have a clue? Evie rolled her eyes at that thought. I told her that most folks, if asked what freedom was, would flounder around and/or come up with some totally lame answer. I convinced Evie that she had not only an opportunity to get some folks to think about the nature of freedom, but that, in the light of he sacrifies of our vets and the state of he country today, she had a duty to do so. I recited the Margaret Thatcher quote as an example.

That's where I left things, and she just took it from there. The great irnoy is that her biological dad and his wife are liberal fools and America-haters: they won't even let her display an American flag when she vists them in Seattle because, they said, they're not patriotic. They think that patriotism is "all about wanting to have power" - or at least, that's how Evie understands their explanation. She and her twin brother have nothing but contempt for people like that.

This is wonderful! I don't have time to list all the great things about this work, but quickly: the children singing the Star Spangled Banner, the camera as it panned down the line of graves, the old guys at the Legion, I could picture them as young men, lucky to come home as perhaps some of their friends didn't, the slow motion at the end of the Legion Man's speech, that was brilliant, very very nice, thank you for sharing this with us.

Great work. You're right to feel proud.

They think that patriotism is "all about wanting to have power"...

It's baffling how some folks west of the Cascades twist that one around backwards.

I see it a case of projection. It's a part of the constellation of mental disorders common to those with the liberal mindset. These people love to take what's squirming around in the snakepit in their skulls and use it to shout down others with whom they disagree. I'd go so far as to say that this sort of projection, along with a pathological degree of compartmentalization is the only thing that keeps them from simply exploding from the pressure of the contradiction in which they live.

Awesome. Really liked it.

Could you find out who/what did the guitar work at the very end of the tribute? I would like to have a copy of it.

The matches are piling up....

It's easy for a vet to empathize with his brothers and sisters, for obvious reasons. For a non-vet to do so, it takes a unique and particular type of heart and mind.

Bah! It's loading so slowly. I need more POWER! :(

But I am very impressed with the little that's run so far.

Think I'll try this around five in the morning, when it doesn't matter how long I have the phone line in use. I look forward to seeing the rest.

Have you tried a right click on the link and then 'save target as' ? That should do it. I'll find out about the guitar piece.
