This morning FandF group mentioned that intelligence sources are sure that the tape was created piece by piece rather than one entire message. This means a real voice and an impersonated one could be on the same message, itself of poor quality.

This is practically proof by itself that the tape is a fake. If some parts (90%) are really Bin(dead) Ladin and the remainder (containing recent specific events) are a vocal stand-in, then it would have had to be made in splices. I thought so all along and when I heard this I nearly sprayed my coffee. BTW - Iraq has EXPERT voice and visual impersonators for Saddam, so they are probably rather adept at the science and could easily have created this to shake western resolve, turn attention from inspections, embarass the president. And Iraq calls Bush "pharao" and NOONE else does but the tape says the same thing.

Until I see that killer on video tape, holding a recent newspaer I won't believe for a second that he still breathes.

I concur with your analysis. However, its better to believe he is alive and well and having afternoon tea with Saddam.

it was created by terrorist dj's. you can hear the scratching in the background.

Osama Bin Vanilly?EXCELLENT!!!

bin laden could have very easily been recorded -- a long time prior to the issuance of this tape --- saying every single word and every single country/region/people that might be relevant in the future.
I suspected it might have been pieced together, but I only have my fiance to corroborate this story as I didn't do any prognosticating on this topic here at FR....excuse excuses:)

If the recent attacks had been in the plan for a year or more, what would have stopped them from making these tapes a year or more ago? That way they splice in, after the fact, the recordings about the attacks that are actually carried out, and he sounds like he is still around.

I deal with audio every day. I do tons of digital editing. I could edit a tape to fool the best. The one caveat is that the source material must be at least somewhat similar.
Any variations in source material will expose the most seamless of edit points.

bin laden could have very easily been recorded -- a long time prior to the issuance of this tape --- saying every single word and every single country/region/people that might be relevant in the future. I suspected this too, in the early months after his last video. When you're hiding out in a cave, with nothing but time on your hands, you could make hundreds of tapes in just a few days' time. And those hundreds of tapes could be combined in thousands of ways. Notice that no dates are mentioned in the most recent tape. Perhaps the insertion of a spoken date would have looked TOO obvious, and easy to detect.
However, for him to do that would probably mean that he believed we would probably get him. That would say to me that he understood the nature of the forces arrayed against him, and makes him and his ilk more dangerous for it.
It's very difficult to know if we are giving bin Laden too much credit, or not enough.
