Ex-president Bill Clinton and Senator-wife Hillary are out to "humiliate" President Bush and his family in this fall's election, Newsweek reporter Howard Fineman said Sunday.
"The people who are running the Democratic campaign behind the scenes are Bill and Hillary Clinton and all of their friends from the Clinton years," Fineman told NBC's "The Chris Matthews Show."
"Whether it's Harold Ickes, James Carville, Stan Greenberg, Terry McAuliffe, the party chair - it's all the Clinton crowd," he added.
When to explain what the former first couple hope to accomplish, Fineman said, "What the Clintons want - they want back in the action. They want credit for the, quote, Clinton years, and they want to humiliate the Bush family if they can."
In his report in next week's Newsweek, Fineman reveals that Hillary has been telling crowds at fundraisers that Bush is an illegitimate president who had been "selected" instead of elected.
The sentiment echoes that of her husband, who made the same charge to a Labour Party convention in Blackpool, England last month.
"The election was so close in America that they won it fair and square - 5 to 4 at the Supreme Court," the ex-president said as a stunned British Prime Minister Tony Blair looked on.
"We should actually be glad, though," Clinton continued to grouse. "Because there were seven Republicans and only two Democrats on the Supreme Court - and two of those Republicans - God bless them, they will be rewarded in heaven - they actually took the decision that we should count votes when the American people vote, and I appreciate that."
The goal of humiliating the Bushes is so important to the Clintons that they're even redirecting resources away from cash-strapped New York gubernatorial candidate Carl McCall, for whom they've campaigned vigorously, to target first brother Jeb.
"(The Democrats) took money out of New York to put it in the Florida Governor's race," said Fineman. "That's what Bill Clinton is advising them to do."

Carville is a viper. So is Hillary. To expectorate on them would be a waste of spittle.

Leave it to buttboy Howie Fineman to get the Clintoons' message out.
It's left to him because no one -- not even Newsweak -- takes little Sidney Blumenthal seriously as a journalist anymore.

As far as winning an election, for themselves, goes, the "Former Occupant of the Oval Office, 1993-2001" and his venomous viper of a spouse are abolutely brilliant. Unfortunately, they know neither how to govern, once they gain office, nor how to carry anyone else along with them into office. They are a team of two. Anybody else that comes along is an expendable. This is an object lesson that has been laid out again and again, and still some will not or cannot bring themselves to apply that sad experience to their own situation. Until just after they have been pitched over the side.
