The United States has opened an FBI office in Beijing.
It is part of the US effort to crack down on terrorism.
US Attorney-General John Ashcroft today announced a veteran Chinese American FBI agent has started work in Beijing as the organisation's legal attaché.
His job will be to liase with Chinese authorities on international crime and terrorism.
Law enforcement links between the two countries have strengthened since the September 11 attacks, and recently the US Government listed the East Turkestan Islamic Movement as a terrorist group, a move applauded by the Chinese Government.
Today's announcement comes as China's President Jiang Zemin is to meet with US President George Bush tomorrow in Texas.

Uhh, oh great. Given the federal government's track-record over the last 10 years, this is going to turn into a massive intelligence sharing operation in favor of the ChiComs. We're going to help the Chinese crackdown on pool table repairmen in Kashgar. I'm sure our Special Forces A-Teams will really appreciate that 10 years from now when they're trying to make friendly contacts in the Chinese interior...not.

Well, I suppose just because the Chinese police use electric shock torture on religious disidents shouldn't cause us any qualms in working with them. And those lunatics squabbling about freedom and what not- they need killin' anyway.

This is what happens when shop keepers determine geopolitical policy.

Well, they already have a complete set of FBI records - thanks to Clinton. It makes sense that we set up an office so that they can keep the records current. (/sarcasm)
