Rev. Peterson Charges: “Harry Belafonte, Jesse Jackson Are Democrats’ ‘House Slaves’”

Los Angeles –Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Founder and President of BOND, the Brotherhood Organization of A New Destiny and host of the nationally syndicated Jesse Lee Peterson Radio Show (Information Radio Network), today blasted calypso singer Harry Belafonte and Jesse Jackson, head of Rainbow/PUSH for their attacks against Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.

Last week, Belafonte charged that Powell was a “house slave.” Later, in an interview on CNN’s Larry King Live he [Belafonte] said that Rice was a bigger sellout than Powell. Monday, at a church in Athens, Ga., Jesse Jackson joined in the attacks, saying, “He’s [Powell] not on our team. If he wins, Trent Lott wins. If he wins, we lose. If he wins, poor folks lose.”

Rev. Peterson said, “These attacks are politically motivated. Belafonte is a washed up calypso singer, who has never met a liberal cause he didn’t like. He accuses Powell of serving at the ‘pleasure of his master,’ but Belafonte himself is famous for singing, dancing and entertaining his master [his audience] many of whom are white, so by his own definition that makes him a ‘house slave.’ Rev. Peterson added, “Jackson is a modern day plantation overseer. His job is to make sure blacks don’t escape from the Democrats’ plantation and continue to vote for liberal Democrats’. In exchange, he gets power, prestige and access to the White House; as he did while Bill Clinton was in office.”

Rev. Peterson also called Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice “patriots who worked hard to earn key positions within the Bush Administration. What have Belafonte and Jackson done for their country?” asked Rev. Peterson. “Belafonte and Jackson are the real ‘house slaves.’ Every time they open their mouths they show how extreme and out of touch they are with the rest of America,” concluded Rev. Peterson.

I agree completely.

My only problem with Powell is that I'm afraid the day is going to come when he MUST be fired as his views are quite opposed to the President's. He has an alarming tendency to make statements that appear to overrule what the President has stated, as he did with regard to the Pali question and the Iraqi situation. I'm afraid that if President Bush ever fires him there is going to be a racial firestorm -- indeed those that are calling him a 'house slave' now will be lauding and hailing him then in order to get at Mr. Bush. It makes me nervous.

I guess, since the left has been shouting Uncle Tom at black conservatives for so long, that Rev. Peterson is justified in throwing it back in their faces. I can't say I like hearing it, but I say give 'em another helping of it, Reverend. After all, it's the Democrats that have set up the political plantation for blacks and try to ostracize anyone so--yes, I'll say it--uppity enough to try to leave it for more conservative pastures.

You are absolutely right. This message needs to be shouted from the pulpits. But big Media won't do it and white conservatives can't do it, so it must be the black conservatives. Let us support the black conservatives. In many ways they are the best hope not only for other blacks, but for our country as a whole.

Sure is nice to hear Peterson speak. I long for the day when the majority of blacks will look to the present and future, and stop looking to the past. Here in Atlanta, on both PBS stations, they have been running exposes every night on lynchings, etc, that occurred 75-100 years ago. Past, past, past. History is important, but not at the expense of the present and future. Peterson represents a possible future, one much better than the current crop of Sharpton/Jackson haters.....
