New Bush ad paints picture of 'Big Spending Bill'

By Paige St. John
Gannett News Service

TALLAHASSEE - The latest campaign TV advertisement from Gov. Jeb Bush takes aim at “Big Spending Bill” McBride, threatening that the Democrat might raise sales taxes, bring on higher property taxes and enact a state income tax.

The 30-second commercial, to air on Sunday, marks the first attack ad by the Bush-Brogan campaign since the primary, when the campaign ignored Democratic contender Janet Reno and aimed at McBride. Bush’s campaign office had no immediate comment on the early release, obtained Friday by Gannett News Service.

Using McBride’s support for class size caps, the “Big Spending Bill” spot alleges the cost for McBride’s campaign promises so far is $29 billion.

From there: “McBride says he’ll raise your taxes. Will it be higher sales taxes, higher property taxes, a new state income tax? Tell the truth Bill, how can you pay for it?

“One thing is for sure, $29 billion in new McBride spending means billions in new McBride taxes.”

McBride’s campaign called the commercial “ridiculous” and “a lie.”

“He’s talked about raising one tax and one tax only, which is the 50-cent (per pack increase) on cigarettes,” said McBride spokesman Alan Stonecipher. “If there is a grain of truth hidden anywhere, I have yet to hear it.”

Stonecipher said McBride has promised to increase education spending only by $1 billion, half funded by raising the state tax on cigarettes. The rest would come from closing half a dozen exemptions in the sales tax - amounting to a new tax for the businesses currently enjoying those exemptions - and cuts in other state agencies.

Stonecipher also said McBride is not contemplating rolling back recent cuts in the state tax on investments, even though in the past the candidate has said he believed those cuts unduly hurt Florida’s budget. “All that money has run out the door already,” Stonecipher said.

McBride has endorsed the class size initiative, but not detailed how he would propose the state Legislature fund the voter-mandate if both he and the constitutional amendment are approved Nov. 5.

[JEB'S 1ST ATTACK AD in POST-PRIMARY SEASON:]

TV Announcer:

"Big spending Bill McBride. Every day he promises more spending. The total so far? 29 billion dollars. How can McBride pay for all this spending?

"McBride says he'll raise your taxes. Will it be higher sales taxes, higher property taxes, a new state income tax?

Tell the truth Bill, how can you pay for it?

"One thing is for sure, 29 billion in new McBride spending means billions in new McBride taxes."

"Lautenburg demanded an apology from Forrester! Lol!"

I saw that too, RC. Lautenberg assumed a haughty attitude challenging Forrester as if his voting record wasn't a thing to be discussed! Lautenberg looked ridiculous as will McBride/McAuliffe if he doesn't finally answer the question about how he would pay for the buffet he's going to put 'on the table'.

Begins commercial run on Sunday giving the question three days exposure to voters, then drives the question home in the debate Tuesday! Yea!

Since McBride/McAuliffe's campaign knows this is coming, it would be a good idea to have numbers to rebut his anticipated response (if he manages to come up with one).

Big Spending Bill has a nice ring to it. Folks should remember it.

Re: Class size amendment--With the insane number of amendments on the ballot, including the "Pig Amendment," maybe, just maybe, folks will look more closely at them all--and vote NO on this one.

I think Jeb's campaign director who used to work for McCain is a mole out to hurt him......any campaign man who thinks Jeb shouldn't use his brother, the President of the US, and very popular, is not working for Jeb's best interests

What I don't think McBride's handlers realized was just how sensitive Florida citizens are to the issue of higher taxes.

I strongly agree with you here, Chris.

The contracts have Jeb at 54 to 46 to win re-election.

This sounds about right to me, if there is a high turn-out of the FL GOP base along with independents and Hispanics.

jeb! should also point out that the entire state budget is only $49 billion per year. a $29 billion increase is ridiculous.

as for the state income tax, i've been screaming that to every person that will listen for the last month and a half. i think its starting to have some effect now.

"jeb! should also point out that the entire state budget is only $49 billion per year. a $29 billion increase is ridiculous."

I love repeating terrific points! IF voters just stop and think that it would be like having a $49 thousand dollar per year personal budget and buying something (like a new house) that increases the budgetary need by $29 thousand dollars to $78 thousand dollars a year. If everyone in the household already works, you'd have to start robbing your neighbors to make your budget! For some reason when you attach billions & trillions to a dollar sign, it loses meaning for John Q. Public.

don't forget that if ammendment 6 passes, smoking will most likely decrease even more. and it probably will pass because there's a lot of idiots out there that will be like "yeah, i don't like smokey restaurants." mcbride's cigarette tax isn't even going to come close to covering his spending.

McBride was first to propose ways to pay for public education improvements he says are overdue. "A new 50-cent per pack tax on cigarettes, used only for schools, would produce almost $600 million a year," he said. "Removing sales tax exemptions on some items such as stadium skyboxes and tanning salons could up the total to almost $1 billion," he said.

Someone needs to tell Mr. McBride that removing sales tax exemptions is the same as increasing taxes. Also, serious studies of the "class-size" amendment show that McBride's simple tax increases won't come close to paying for this pro-teacher's union, anti-school choice, anti-truth turkey. He's a liar.

A seemingly well-intentioned constitutional amendment that proposes smaller class sizes could significantly cripple K-12 schools, community colleges and universities if it passes. If this amendment passes, we will almost immediately need 32,000 new teachers, new classrooms at a cost of $9 billion, and another $2.5 billion to pay for the new teachers -- and $2.5 billion is more than it costs to run all 11 of our public universities to give you a reference point for the cost of this bad amendment. Link

The teacher's unions have been at this a long time:

At its national meeting last week, held just 90 miles south of Milwaukee in Chicago, the NEA reaffirmed its commitment to fight against voucher programs, including the imposition of a five-year, $5 fee increase for members with the specific purpose of fighting education reform initiatives.

NEA spokesperson Barbara Parker told WorldNetDaily that three dollars of the fee increase will be earmarked to challenging "anti-public education measures such as vouchers" at the ballot box. The other two dollars will fund a nationwide pro-public education media campaign.
