SniperWatch.com is now up and running!

SniperWatch.com is now up and running. Here is a link.

I put this site together over the weekend in an effort to assist law enforcement in the DC sniper case. It allows volunteers to monitor DC/Maryland/Va webcams and report sightings of suspected vehicles to a database. The database is available to law enforcement (only) to monitor in real-time or view retrospectively. I sent an email to the Maryland Task Force tonight to let them know about the site and I will post when I hear their response. Once I hear back from them and assuming they are interested, I also plan to contact media outlets in an effort to grow the volunteer base.

Ok, fellow freepers, what we need now is some volunteers to start monitoring the webcams and start reporting sightings. Even if you can only watch for 5 or 10 minutes, that is Ok. To be a volunteer, go to the sight and follow the instructions to create a userid and password. I have included userid and password functionality in order to maintain the integrity of the data.

I know this sounds like a long shot but there is a chance that this data could really help law enforcement in the investigation.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, you can email me using the contact link on the site or post back here. Finally, this site went up pretty quick so if you run into any bugs, please let me know.

Thanks.

Damn. I finished this posting and went to check the latest news and saw a woman has been shot in Falls Church.

I know sniperwatch.com is a long shot but I really feel like I have to SOMETHING to stop this madness.

Don't worry. Every angle the police and FBI are working is also a long shot, but somebody's long shot -- and nobody knows which one -- will be the one that catches this creep.

This is the modern citizen militia in action -- we still need our guns, but we also need to be adding the newfangled Internet stuff to our arsenal. You're a fine citizen for doing your part, and for enabling a lot of other citizens to do their part.

The site is needed and looks okay. One suggestion, get rid of the frames - always annoying when part of the screen does not scroll. At least to my eyes.

Thanks for taking a look. This site went up fast so I will be making upgrades as time permits, one of which may be the removal of frames.

This is not a bad idea but I am looking at some of the camera shots some areas take a shot ever 4 minites and I see nothing really. It is very hard to make anything out.

We all know they will not be in the same vans as reported before. So I am not sure what to look for.

The Maryland cams are updated every 4 minutes. The DC/Virgina are streaming video. I have listed a few cams on the "Traffic Cam" page that are lighted and work well at night. Obviously, one's options for picking a good cam increase dramatically during daylight hours.

The only thing we can do is look for the vehicles the police are looking for. I have listed these on the homepage of sniperwatch.com. Also, when you go to post a sighting, there is a dropdown box to choose which vehicle you are reporting on.

If you know of any other good cams around the DC area, email them to newcams@sniperwatch.com

Just wanted to make sure that the above email wasn't supposed to be newscams@sniperwatch.com

(as in news cams, not new scams, of course)

No, it is newcams@sniperwatch.com as in new cams. That is, cams I don't have listed.

Great idea! We need this or something like it to be put into place for this sniper and future terrorist possibilities. Hope everybody installs cameras. Technology will catch this creep/s.
