I agree. This murderer's an evil punk, not a trained pro. But the media has repeated it enough that I'd be shocked if this poll didn't have a good number of "Yes" votes.

If this turns out to be al-Qaeda people doing this, then I would vote "yes" that they had some sniper training.

If the sniper is an American Angry White Male(TM), then I would seriously doubt that he had sniper training. The person doing this killing spree is too much of a nut for the U.S. Military or SWAT teams. He would never make through the psychological evaluations.

Maybe, maybe not. Not everyone who can hit a target from a distance is military trained.

It does not matter whether the sniper has had US military experience. There are a number of ways to acquire the necessary skills, one of which could very well have been in an al-Qaeda training camp in Sudan or Afghanistan. Everybody thought Timothy McVeigh was simply a disaffected former US Army enlisted man, when the emerging facts indicate he may very well have been a clandestine agent. Same with this sniper. The past experience, or lack thereof, with US military training is not necessarily relevant.

Lee Harvey Oswald was a former US Marine with sniper training, too.

I voted NO...
I routinely make 100yd hits on a paper plate with a blackpowder 1853 ,.53cal. Enfield, and it ain't the most accurate firearm in the world. I spent time in the military but never had anything more that basic firearm training.

When I was in the military, snipers weren't given to anymore psycho;ogical testing than any other troop.

All I have to say is the MEDIA HAS NOTHING BETTER TO DO than conduct a poll. Last week it was Newsweek doing a poll. This is ridiculous. This guy may not even have experience in the army he just may be a guy who just off his rocker with no agenda or no prior hunting or army background or it could be a couple of younger guys with an obsession with sniper video games and want to act out the scenarios as reality.

No...

Military men have a code that would prevent them from shooting unarmed U.S. Civilians.

This is some whack job who needs attention.

Just another thought, this sounds like a real lefty poll.
Do you suspect they’re gonna make a recommendation we “do away” with mil snipers like they do “k-9 Corps police dogs”.
I suspect that’ll reduce the reup rate adversely

"Lee Harvey Oswald was a former US Marine with sniper training, too."

Nah man, Oswald was a radar operator, wasn't he? And when he was in the USMC didn't have any sniper MOS.

Do you think the sniper has U.S. military experience?

Possibly, but there is the same chance that he has had such training as there is for any other male who has some familiarity with long guns. These are NOT long range shots. All that is required is a scope that has been sighted in. A sharpshooter should not need the scope. My eyes are not that great any more and my weapons training in the AF was perfunctory and I am not a hunter and I could make such shots consistently with my Tasco.

9th Div Sniper school in Dong Tam did the weeding out along the way..
Im pretty sure these days down at Benning they do psych workups on candidates..
I'm just saying all things being equal..odds are the killer(s) arent US military trained of any sniper specific training.. not saying its impossible just unlikely..
The evidence the public has doesnt lead to that conclusion in spite of a hyperbolic press corps
baiting viewers for their advertisers- imo

Don't even need a scope after 10 min my girls could hit the X ring all day at 100 yd with an M-16 iron sights and they were 8& 10 at the time.

Don't even need a scope

I am assuming someone with not-so-great eyes like mine in order to emphasize that there is no special training or ability required, just some familiarity with a long gun and a little practice in the back yard. Good for your daughters; I hope you have taught them to use a handgun, also.
