Tree-sitter injured in fall from redwood

By MICHAEL DE GIVE
Sentinel STAFF WRITER

CORRALITOS — A tree-sitter protesting logging in the slopes above Ramsey Creek fell 50 feet from his redwood perch and onto a stump Tuesday night.

The man was believed to have fractured an arm and leg in the fall. The steep terrain and gravel roads forced rescue workers to leave their vehicles and hike more than half an hour to get to the scene, said Dave Sumner, a senior emergency dispatcher.

An air ambulance was waiting nearby about 9 p.m. Tuesday as rescuers carried the injured man back down the densely wooded hill. The fall was reported at 7:12 p.m.

Earth First! Santa Cruz spokesman Dennis Davie confirmed two of its members have been living in redwoods since August in the 150-acre, second-growth forest owned by Redwood Empire, a San Jose-based logging company. The company, owned by Roger Burch, owns hundreds of acres in Santa Cruz County.

The group says the erosion caused by logging the property pollutes Ramsey Creek, which feeds into both Browns and Corralitos creeks, all habitat to threatened steelhead trout.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and American Medical Response responded to the incident.

The forest is near Mount Madonna off Hazel Dell Road.

Nah...they picked the erosion thing up off these threads, probably.

Wrongo! California is now instituting TMDLs for nonpoint sources of silt under Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act.

"If we can sue tobacco makers for causing deaths with false advertising, should the families sue environmental groups for this?"

I would think that this child's family would have a strong wrongful death case against EF and many other enviral orgs, but it's likely that the parents are cut out of the same RED mold (or is it mould :o)

"I know for a fact that if that was my property, and I had a logging permit in hand, that other tree would be where my chainsaw and I would be headed first thing in the morning"

There was a treehugger on NY State land...chained himself to a tree. Hubby asked him to unchain himself, because the State Forestry Dept wanted that tree cut. The guy pretended to swallow the key. Hubby went around the back side of the tree and proceded to begin notching it. The speed at which the nut regurgitated that key was INCREDIBLE.

Treehuggers ARE dangerous, and not just from tresspassing. They do really deadly things like pulling their pregnant roller skates in front of fully loaded log trucks heading down steep hills, then slowing way down!!!

They bungee jump off over passes and try to kick the windshields of log trucks. They burn houses which they say are encroaching on nature.

They're dangerous...they're terrorists.

"If you had a Timber Harvest Permit (logging permit) in hand in California you would need a Licensed Timber Operator to cut them or face a $25,000 fine."

True. Leave the cutting thinning of treehuggers out of our forests to the licensed professionals <G>

I saw one that was as flat as a pancake from doing just that on a logging road near Healdsburg.

Yes they are terrorists, and we sorely need a zero tolerance policy on Environmentalism. - It has cost us far more than the WTC attack has, and will continue to do so.

If only the greedy corporations would do research on growing shorter trees, accidental deaths like this could
be stopped.

"They just found an abandoned platform with death threats to the landowner painted on it. Bud happens to be one of the finest timber owners in the world."

I hope that TERRORISTIC THREATS are still against the law in Kalifornia.

"Most people don't realize how brainwashed these kids are and dimly recall their twentyish behavior."

Many of us, if not ALL of us, DO understand that the public school system, and later (if they get that far) institutions of higher learning have and continue to brainwash our youth.

HOWEVER...these kids consider themselves the intellectual elite of this country. They believe that the world would be a real Utopia if only we would turn the reigns of power to them, because THEY know the truth.

They have libraries. They have Internet access....do they do any deeper research once they reach the age of consent (at which age they are responsible for their actions, including reckless endanderment and tresspassing) ?

No, they do not. They're not THAT brainwashed. They're more INDOCTRINATED into the leftist ideology of "Socialsm would have worked if only the right people were in power."

If they can study Marx, they can study forestry managent. They can use empirical evidence to see for themselves whether the concepts that they embrace are really working. They do not.

In other words, they DO bear at least SOME of the responsibility for their actions. NOW...LETS GO AFTER THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM.

"It is now confirmed."

Well, now that it's gone beyond the border of conjectural distance and into reality, I'd like to express my sincere sympathy for the boy's family. I hope they are not proud of the way he met his death.

What a waste.

GROOOOAAN!!! California...where they stuck goats into high fuel areas (2000) because they wouldn't allow thinning or clearing of brush. I should have known. ( I raised goats for years...they eat weeds ans saplings, not dead underbrush)

We have no disagreement on the kid's culpability. He was guilty of a crime. He is accountable for his own death. HOWEVER, he had accomplices who RIGHT NOW are turning his criminal act into one of martyrdom. Wait ten years and this kid will look tame compared to what the system is producing now.

They're not THAT brainwashed.

No, they ARE that brainwashed, via cognitive dissonance, behavior control drugs, television, video games, magazines, group pressure sessions... In every sense of the word, especially in terms of its duration and the fact that the omnipotent State and the media culture are both placed above parents in the child's world hierarchy, it is worse than brainwashing; It is brain-molding.

They're more INDOCTRINATED into the leftist ideology of "Socialsm would have worked if only the right people were in power."

Actually that is the line from about five years ago. The new one is, "Socialism has been perfected since the fall of the Soviet Union."

That's called background erosion, or bedload. The bureaucrats routinely grossly under-estimate bedload so that they can set attainment targets that can't be met. It keeps them in business forever.

Yep. That little tactic caused several deaths, because they don't understand the first law of motion any better than they understand gravity.

Imagine thinking that 80,000 pounds can stop at the same speed and over the same distance as a VW Bug.

I AM afraid of what these kids will be ten years from now...which is why we need to take control of our public education system NOW...we also need to take control of our institutions of higher learning, because the snot-nosed brats getting federal jobs and suggesting, as well as enforcing DAMAGING PC policy are getting the same leftist crap jammed down their throats.

I suppose the reason I'm not sure they are that brainwashed is that I refused to be...I have always done independent research - I'm not the most trusting of souls - and I passed that need for independent research on to my kids...who have turned out quite conservative.

Those kids can't be that brainwashed unless their parents aided and abbetted the brainwashers.
