A 37-year-old San Leandro man died Monday morning after impaling himself on a wrought iron fence a block away from his home.

David Renteria was walking his pit bull about 8 a.m. Sunday in the 600 block of Tiffany Road when suddenly he said he felt ``lightheaded'' and fell, according to a police report.

I met a fellow once who had been impaled on a board fence (auto accident). A 1x4 or 1x6 plank went right through his midsection, entering above the navel and exiting the back. It somehow missed his spinal column. Emergency workers were able to saw off the section and get him to the hospital, where the remainder was cut out. He has a very impressive hollow in his stomach area, which he was happy to exhibit on request. Too bad this fellow wasn't as lucky.

I bet the Alameda County Fire Department EMT's got some good pics for their scrapbook (you'd have to be a fireman EMT to understand).

I think I've found what went wrong. If his head had been a little bit heavier, it might have deflected the spike. (I'm so sorry...)

Good point, but how had he must have fallen on a four-foot fence to impale himself in this way? My oldest son in 4'5", and I can't imagine how this guy fell on top of this fence unless he took a running jump or something.

I saw a construction work fall off a scafolding? from 25ft in the air and he landed on a piece of rebar that had been sticking out of the ground about 12 inches and had not been capped. It entered between his rectum and scrotum. YIKES! The worst part is that they had to use a cutting torch to cut the rebar in half so the man could be transported to the hospital. To add insult to injury, there was a story published in the local newspaper about the incident. OUCH!

A young Marine in Yuma was impaled years ago jumping off a power supply cabinet of a radar unit. For those not in the know, you're supposed to ground a radar unit with a 6-8ft copper grounding rod. Whoever grounded the unit didn't drive the rod far enough down and when the young man jumped instead of hitting the ground he was suspended like a scarecrow abot a foot off the ground. He was lucky that it only perforated his rectum and colon and didn't get driven further up. Ouch.

What does the height of your oldest son have to do with anything? I mean, that sure if fascinating that he's 4'5" and all, but really, is it pertinent to this story?

This guy that died was a full grown man - figure 6 ft tall or so, say 200 lbs. It's easy to imagine a man like that catching a spike under his chin or below his jaw. Gruesome.

I find it quite sad that the replies to your post were so cynical. A man died innocently enough while walking his dog. It's not like he was running from the cops.

Nice job on taking the low road folks.
