Iran Starts Mass Production of Missiles
Reuters ^ | Sep 25, 2001

Iran, accused by the United States of developing weapons of mass destruction and the means to deliver them, has begun the mass production of a new surface-to-surface missile, newspapers said Wednesday.

They said Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani inaugurated a production line for the Fateh A-110 surface-to-surface missile which has a range of 130 miles as well as an anti-ship missile and 35mm anti-aircraft shells.

"Iran's deterrence policy in producing defensive equipment aims to bring maximum security to the Islamic Republic's borders," the Siyasat-e Rouz newspaper quoted Shamkhani as saying.

Iran successfully tested the Fateh A-110 missile in September.

"Iran has no plan to increase the range of its missiles and Iran's missile programs are fully in line with international principles," he said.

Defense Ministry officials were not immediately available to confirm the reports carried in several newspapers.

President Bush has labeled Iran part of an "axis of evil" accusing it of seeking to acquire weapons of mass destruction and sponsoring terrorism -- charges Iran strongly denies.

Iran says its weapons manufacturing program is strictly conventional and for defensive purposes only.

"Maintaining the balance of power in the region provides the best guarantee for regional peace and security," Shamkhani said.

Iran has developed a range of missiles, tanks and jet fighters mainly with the help of Russia, China and North Korea. The United States has urged those countries stop arms cooperation with the Islamic Republic.

Sadly this isn't going to change anyone's mind. The traitors and terrorist sympathizers are all going to harp about how they are doing it to defend themselves from that nasty imperialist US.

A range of 130 miles? In the hands of Hamas/Hizballah, that's all they need, because that's where they're going to be used.

Why? Inspectors won't do anything but look around. Are they getting paranoid something might be found?
They don't need surface-to-surface missiles to use against a few inspectors just checking things out and making sure things are "Kosher."

SSN's....ha!

Let the Ohio (SSBN) release a volley.

24 missiles of 8,000nm range, and 12, 100kton independently targetable warheads. Each will hit within 10 meters of it's intended target. Nearly 3000 Hiroshima's on one boat.

We always keep a few at sea. Nobody knows where they are, but they know they're there.

No NATION would dare fire WMD at us. When SSBN's pull into port they open the silos to show everyone with eyes in the sky the missiles are there. They also know there's 3-5 of them at sea.

Iran Starts Mass Production of Missiles

This reminds me of the first "Die Hard" movie where Bruce Willis yells out of a broken window, "Welcome to the party, pal!!"

Iran has some interests around the Caspian region that could justify strengthening defenses, and there is the continuing unrest to the west. There wouldn't be much threat from the east since the Taliban have been deposed. These weapons wouldn't be of much use by terrorists of global reach. The military production seems nominally reasonable.

To bad that Carter screwed the pooch and allowed this Islamic situation to arise. The Shah was one of the most benign and thoughful leaders in that region.

I had the good luck to meet with and lift a few cool ones, (he drank coke being Islamic) with an Iranian Lt who was attending communications officers school at Keesler AFB in '65.

Two years later I was stationed in North Texas at Perrin AFB. A delegation from Iran was slated to visit and I was asked to be part of the base party who would show the Iranian officers our facilities. There were six AF Colonels and me the 1st Looey. My counterpart was an Iranian Col. When the aircraft arrived and the delegation disembarked I was surprised to see my old buddy from Keesler. Our greeting was quite exuberant and startled my boss who was one of the Cols. We jumped in my staff car and took of for a whirlwind tour.

When I asked about his promotion he told me that based on his family's background, (they were major stockholders in Iranian Tel!) and his having attended Air Force Communications School at Keesler he had been promoted to Col and assigned to the General Staff of the Iranian AF.

Today's he's probably dead but his generation had learned and lived with Western ways and we hear the murmurings and rumblings of discontent. If we feed that desire the Mullahs will be mauled!

If the US takes over Iraq, how would Iran get these missles to the West Bank?

Southern Lebanon will be glowing green immediately after the first missle salvo striking Tel Aviv. Then Damascus, then Baghdad, then Tehran. Israel will obliterate them.

Interesting story about your Iranian friend.

A stockbroker here on my left of liberal island is from Iran, sent away to USA as a teenager for safety's sake by his family when Shah deposed. He's a good American family man, great capitalist, and of course, fears for the safety of his family back in Iran if things explode there. Complex situation for people like this. And there are many in USA. I forgot to ask whether he's still a muslim, but I do know he's a Mariner's fan. Must count for something!
