US Plans for Mass Smallpox Inoculations

CNSNews.com) - The federal government has come up with a plan for vaccinating the entire U.S. population within five days of an actual smallpox outbreak, and on Monday, it will share that plan with state officials.

The 100-page plan includes instructions on how to conduct mass vaccinations: One unnamed federal official was quoted as saying the guidelines address "anything you can think of in running a vaccine clinic...It literally says, 'Here's how you set one up and here's how you run it.'"

The plan spells out how many clinics and healthcare workers would be needed; where the clinics should be set up; and what kind of security would be needed to control a panicky public.

The federal government is still debating who should be vaccinated before an actual smallpox case is reported. A decision on that is expected next month.

>>>catalogue the "tasty" ones? - wheres my reynolds wrap<<<

Using the wrap for baking - instead of protection from ELF - may be in order (that is, if you're one of the tasty ones)?

Why don't I like this announcement?

Preposterous. Five days? The United States government could not FIND all Americans in a YEAR. Remember the 2000 Census?

A pipe dream.

Perhaps two lines.  One line to get a shot, the other to get shot.  I'm in favor of a third option: The right to be left alone.

They don't need to find everybody. The greater the percentage of the population vaccinated, the more slowly the disease will spread. Beyond a certain percentage, the disease won't spread at all. It's called "herd immunity."

I'll bet if the entire population was vaccinated, more people would die from reactions to the vaccinations than
smallpox if everyone was just left alone. As Yogi Berra once said, "Include me out."

The death rate from the old smallpox vaccine before it was discontinued was about one in a million. Considering the awfulness of the threat, a few hundred deaths strikes me as a reasonable price for insurance.

By making provision for voluntary smallpox innoculation today it is possible that sufficient herd immunity would be gaioned that no significant emergency mass innoculations would be needed. Thus there is no need for people to panic and the small pox attack is effectively detered. Why bother to go to the time and trouble to mount a smallpox attack against an immune population?

The numbers run as follows approx 1 death per million who are vacinated from complications due to the vaccine. 15% of those who have not been vaccinated will die from a smallpox infection. Figuring 280,000,000 population of USA we estimate about 280 dead from a total immunization program. Now when we look at say 10,000 people being infected with smallpox in a short period then we come out with 1,500 dead.

I understand your point but the idea of tens of millions of people being herded into clinics within five days is beyond imagination. There are more than 280 million people in this country. Does everybody leave work to get a shot? Can you picture traffic jams so large there is absolute gridlock? People might be standing in lines a mile long. Will we close the interstate highways and give long-haul truckers their shots by going truck-to-truck?

If you refuse a shot, will you be hauled away to the Gulag or executed on the spot?

The logistical difficulties that you suggest would be presented by a program for a quick mass immunization of the U.S. population constitute a strong reason for a voluntary mass immunization in advance of any attack.

The bill to remove/limit liability on the manufacturers was quietly reintroduced last week. If they manufacturers won't stand behind it, I don't want the stuff.

The leave me alone, public health is a police state crowd will get their well deserved Darwin awards in the event of a smallpox outbreak.

By making provision for voluntary smallpox innoculation today it is possible that sufficient herd immunity would be gaioned that no significant emergency mass innoculations would be needed.

There would have to be special features put in place to do that.

Someone on another thread pointed out that the lesion from the vaccination sheds the virus until it heals. This means that those undergoing vaccination who walk around in an unvaccinated public would inevitably spread the smallpox to some unvaccinated people. Therefore, some kind of requirement for self-quarantining these people for a few days would have to be met.
