Overlooked by the media - for the most part - while America mourned its dead and honored its heroes on September 11, 2002, an "obscene spectacle" took place at a London mosque. DONNA ABU-NASR, AP Writer and Farrukh Dhondy, City Journal Online reported on the surreal "celebration" of the WTC attack.
A meeting entitled "Sept. 11, 2001: A Towering Day in History," found over 1000 Muslims gathered at 1 PM in order to "applaud the action of the WTC bombers at exactly 1:46 PM London time - the exact hour, a year earlier, when the first plane hit its target in New York... Menacing young men with kaffiyehs over their faces stood on the mosque's steps to prevent unfriendly journalists from entering." 500 of London's Metropolitan Police stood by to protect their rights to hold this meeting.
Abu Hamza al-Masri, British citizen since 1985, engineer turned cleric, chaired the meeting. He heads the Finsbury Park mosque, well known as the jihad indoctrination center for Islamic youth in England. Several detainees in Guantanamo captured fighting for the Taliban got their start at Finsbury Park.
The one-eyed, one-handed mullah is wanted by the FBI for questioning. He recruited Richard Reid (shoe-bomber) and is implicated in training Zacharias Moussaoui. England has denied extradition.
His funds were frozen by the U.S. Treasury for his alleged membership in the Islamic Army of Aden. That organization is linked to al-Qaida and claimed responsibility for the bombing of the USS Cole
He is wanted in Yemen on criminal charges stemming from the arrest of six of his followers, including his son, arrested for terrorism after being caught with weapons, explosives, plans and maps for attacking British diplomats. Hamza's response to the arrests:
Hamza said "he was in favor of armed struggle against all agencies of the British state that supported corrupt regimes. If these men, including his son, were found guilty and executed, they would be martyrs to the cause of Islam."
He says he lost his left hand and eye fighting the former Soviet-backed government in Afghanistan and "...he uses these injuries as his warrior credentials. The claim is a lie. A British documentary producer, Alu Jamal, interviewed him on camera in Pakistan for a BBC film a year after the Russians left Afghanistan. The footage shows Hamza with his eye and hand intact. His injuries probably result from mishandling explosives. "
The headliner for this horror pageant was Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad, the London-based leader of the Islamic cult Al Muhajiroun, which has issued a decree calling for the murder of "those who wage war against Allah". His fundamentalist view of Islam has no room for democracy or other religions.
At this event he was quoted, "Definitely al-Qaida has got rational justification for what they did on Sept. 11."
His website Al Muhajiroun contains fatwahs calling for the murder of General Musharraf of Pakistan and others, like the US, who would resist the universal rule of his Islam.
“The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His apostle and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement”
Other fatwahs demand that separation of church and state (secularism) is a Christian/Jewish tradition against the laws of Allah and commands Muslims to take no part in elected government but instead that they reject all secular governments and follow only the laws of Mohammed as directed by the mullahs.
The group recruits on university campuses and encourages members to join armed struggles abroad. Its goal is to make Britain an Islamic state.
Bakri, a Syrian by birth, founded Hizb ut-Tahrir in Britain, from which he split claiming differences with the Middle East-based leadership. Hizb ut-Tahrir was a jihad group active in Turkey and targeted secular leaders of Arab states. British home secretary David Blunkett is investigating Bakri and his group but "insisted it was important to strike a balance between preventing incitement to violence and preserving the right to free speech...At the point when we believe it to be no longer acceptable and when he is literally inciting others to go out and engage in acts which threaten other people's lives, we will take action against him." Mr. Dhondy speculated in his article that:
"Scotland Yard’s information office refuses to answer questions as to why Abu Hamza isn’t under arrest. Several leaders of the Muslim community in Britain allege that he is working for the British Secret Services—in particular MI5—as an agent provocateur, but the more likely explanation is that he is more useful to the surveillance services as a free agent than he would be in detention. The police outside the “celebration” had a dozen or so photographers videotaping or taking snapshots of everyone coming in or out of the mosque."
