NYT: Iraq has tried to buy thousands of specially designed aluminum tubes, which American officials believe were intended as components of centrifuges to enrich uranium. American officials said that several efforts to arrange the shipment of the high-strength tubes were blocked or intercepted, but they declined to say, citing the extreme sensitivity of the intelligence, where they came from or how they were stopped... Tom Daschle will no doubt refuse to hold a vote on Iraq until the adminsistration explains exactly how they found out about, and how they were stopped.

Wonder how many times Puff will say he's "concerned" about this latest development.

When we finally overthrow Saddam Hussein, we need to get rid of most of the scientists who developed his weapons of mass destruction. Perhaps a few who are helpful in destroying all traces of the program and all stockpiles of these weapons should be spared, but all the remaining scientists and engineers in his WMD program should be tried by military tribunal and then hanged. If they are killed, they will not be able to sell their expertise to other rogue nations.

When we finally overthrow Saddam Hussein, we need to get rid of most of the scientists who developed his weapons of mass destruction.

The problem is that the knowledge necessary to produce WMDs is shared by a large body of scientists and engineers who are common in an area with the Middle East's oil extraction and refining facilities. The real limiting factor isn't the 'know how' but the components and the production facilities.

Perhaps a few who are helpful in destroying all traces of the program and all stockpiles of these weapons should be spared, but all the remaining scientists and engineers in his WMD program should be tried by military tribunal and then hanged.

Doubtless they face that fate if they don't keep Saddam happy. What cooperation would the USA get by promising them the same fate? Khidhir Hamza ran the Iraqi nuclear weapons development program for years and when he tried to defect in 1994 the CIA turned him away. They thought he was lying about the progress Iraq's nuclear program had made. It seems to me that the CIA and MI6 would do better by encouraging Saddam's best WMD development scientists to defect, instead of threatening them with death.
