In boom times, when it's hard to find good workers, companies give raises. In bad times, they give pay cuts -- only they call it "uncompensated overtime". It's easier to get a worker to go for putting in extra time, than to get him to swallow a reduction in pay

Good point. When the economy was booming several years ago, employees thought nothing of leaving their employers in the lurch for a better opportunity. They would dangle job offers in front of their bosses to get raises or they would play job offers off each other to further increase their starting pay or gain additional perks and benefits. All of that is well and good. But now that the shoe is on the other foot and the employers are holding the cards, the employees don't seem to like it all that much.
She should be lucky to have a job. I am certainly thankful for mine and if I had to work 10 extra hours a week to keep it, so be it.
