Fox lobbies Davis to approve immigrant driver license bill

ASSOCIATED PRESS

August 23, 2002

MEXICO CITY Mexican President Vicente Fox spoke by phone to Gov. Gray Davis yesterday, urging him to approve a law that would allow immigrants to apply for driver licenses in the state.

The law, known as the Cedillo bill after its sponsor, Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, would allow an immigrant applying for citizenship or permanent residency to obtain a driver license.

It was approved by the Legislature and put on Davis' desk just after Sept. 11. The Assembly's chief clerk, E. Dotson Wilson, then pulled the bill, saying it was sent to him by mistake.

"President Fox reiterated the importance that the Mexican government and Mexican residents of California attach to the initiative," the president's office said in a statement.

"Given the importance of a driver's license for thousands of Mexicans in California, President Fox and Gov. Davis agreed to work together to find a way for the measure to be implemented as soon as possible," the statement said.

Personally, I think Bush and Fox have some side deals going.

Don't understand the issue. Immigrants can and do apply for and obtain driver's licenses! It is the illegal criminals who break into our country and steal our resources who are not allowed to obtain the rights and priveleges of those who are here legally. Maybe Fox is taking some of the drugs that his military trucks across the border for the Mexican drug lords who are the true rulers of Mexico.

I don't understand this issue. Wouldn't that driver's license be de facto citizenship if it didn't identify the bearer as a citizen of another country? Couldn't they go to another state and get jobs, loans, and housing and no one would know they weren't citizens? Wouldn't it make becoming a citizen less important? Seems like what you could end up with is some corrupt DMV people handing these licenses out to whomever they wanted.

Come to think of it, does a person have to speak and read English to get a US driver's license? If not, why not?

I would hope any illegals that try to get a license are deported...probably not, huh?

I expect this kind of behavior from criminal DemoRATs, but the Republicans are just as bad of late. There seems to be no end to the pandering of criminals who violate our laws by either party to attain illegal votes for power and not for what is in the best interest of Americans. I am no longer blindly supporting the Republicans, my vote come election day will go to the candidate who openly opposes the massive illegal and legal immigration policy that my children will be literally paying for until they die. So things are not looking to good for the Republicans to keep me voting with them.

Fox isn't foxxy enough to get any traction with this crap.

This guy is the Duke of Leech. This sponge ought to be trying to suck up to some other corrupt nation. similar to his own. It's a good thing that the American public can't get their hands on this menace.

Every illegal, Mexican or other, needed to be herded up and sent back to Mexico that helped them get into our country.

Well said. Let's get to it.... after we close down all those Mexican invasion stations (consulates) and boot those vile fifth-columnist employees out of here.

Your state is a trend setter and the nation as a whole depends on the border states to protect the nation's borders. We are truly a lost nation the way some people think about this issue. Oh don't worry about the illegals and how dare you speak about these harmless undocumented people, they're just making a wage and sending it back home to mexico and every other country.

You think the invasion has been bad up until this point, imagine how much larger it will get when illegals are given drivers licenses.

Given that the illegal invasion in California and much of the country has come from our neighbor to the south, and being the Mexicans are considered "Hispanic", I think that it is only fair to show general graphic displays of the invasion.

For the following pictures, you will need to know what each color represents. Thus, here is the key.

1990
Beige 0.0%-16.6% Hispanic
Yellow 16.7%-33.2% Hispanic
Green-Yellow- 33.4%-53.0% Hispanic
Olive Green- 53.3%-75.2% Hispanic
Forest Green- 75.5%-100.0% Hispanic

2000
Beige 0.0%-18.5% Hispanic
Yellow 18.6%-36.2% Hispanic
Green-Yellow 36.3%-55.6% Hispanic
Olive Green 55.7%-76.4% Hispanic
Forest Green 76.4%-98.4% Hispanic

Check out the size and scope of the invasion as it has manifested itself over the years in the LA area, and compare each LA area from 1990 to 2000.

LA Central 1990

LA Central 2000

LA East 1990

LA East 2000

LA Southeast 1990

LA Southeast 2000

LA North 1990

LA North 2000

LA West/Far West 1990

LA West/Far West 2000

Given that the numbers are slightly differentiating, the contrast between 1990 and 2000 is somewhat weakened. However, despite the number variation, the contrasts can clearly be seen.

One more thing to note. Look how not only has the percentage changed and spread from 1990 to 2000, but you can tell that the population has exploded in many areas, as the size of many census tracts are significantly smaller. Thus, that means that the invasion has spread, as well as has been huge in numbers.

I havent seen the stats but will bet you the same tendancy applies throughout the rural south and southwest today. The mexican population is being brought in to do the farm day labor because Americans themselves will no longer apparently do it and you can call it what you wish but it is slavery being perpetuated all over again. In the coming years the Mexican population will be the same as your African- American population is today.
African-Americans have a complaint but is should be with those who became wealthy off of their labor, white indentured servants were treated better than them but not much. Most of the white indentured servants were never really freed and given what they were promised or contracted for. They always had to do their buying and dealings with the so called companies that brought them here and in the long run they were taken advantage of just as the black population. This is all a class issue regardless of what most people think and it still goes on today but the average white has his head buried so deep in the sand he doesnt see it.This also is a reason you have your Jesse Jacksons,Farakans and the like.American corporations dont mind paying them because they keep their people in line so to speak. The black leaders play the game the same way the white ones do and that is why it is to their advantage to keep the majority of the population un-educated.These things are class issues and race is used to inflame and divide and to keep the truth from coming out.

How did you get those maps? (Some do not show up.) I went to http://factfinder.census.gov/

BTW recall that the 1990 and 2000 had differing definitions of what 'hispanic' included which has lead to a bias toward an overemphasis people identifying as hispanic when they did not in 1990.

Yeah, it sounds like they're jumping the gun. We could end up with a wave of immigrants applying for citizenship, getting a driver's license, voting, and never becoming a citizen.

You want to work here? Get a work visa for a set period of time, pay taxes on your earnings, then go home at the end of your visa and take your newborns with you. You want a drivers license? Use your own. That's what I do when I travel to a foreign country.

What in the heck is the big problem here?
