Carnahan’s crew rallies - U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan "Freedom, Faith and Family" bus tour

Russell Boulevard Elementary School.

Unofficially kicking off her first election campaign, U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan stopped at a Columbia school yesterday on her "Freedom, Faith and Family" bus tour.

In a rally at Russell Boulevard Elementary School, Carnahan told cheering partisans that she was following in the footsteps of Harry Truman.

"He connected with the hopes and the hurt of working men and women," she said, referring to the former president’s 1948 whistle-stop train tour. "When he did, he won and he won big, and so will we."

The accuracy of that comparison won’t be determined until Nov. 5, but in one sense Carnahan is clearly tracing a trail blazed by the former president. Vice President Truman had been boosted to the Oval Office after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and his 1948 campaign was an effort to prove that he could earn the presidency in his own right.

Likewise, Carnahan was appointed to the Senate two years ago - filling Truman’s old seat in her first elected office - after her husband, former Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan, was elected posthumously. After years of campaigning at her husband’s side, Carnahan is now trying to win the seat in her own right and finds herself at the forefront of a campaign that has attracted national attention because of the one-vote margin of Democratic control in the Senate.

While some observers have questioned her effectiveness in the Senate, Carnahan is clearly comfortable on the campaign trail. After delivering her stump speech yesterday, the candidate lingered to receive hugs, handshakes and words of encouragement from the partisan crowd and to sign campaign posters, fliers and even a picture of her late husband.

"You don’t know me, but you are my hero," one woman told her.

During her stump speech, Carnahan touched on several issues that have dominated the early stages of her race against Republican Jim Talent, including a prescription drug benefit for Medicare, corporate fraud and the estate tax. "We need to hold the Ken Lays of the world responsible for the hurt they are causing the American people," she said.

Former Missouri Gov. Roger Wilson of Columbia introduced Carnahan, saying that "a lot of people are trying to take advantage of Jean’s newness - I truly do feel sorry for them."

Wilson also took the opportunity to make an indirect comment on the current debate about war with Iraq. Noting that his son is a Marine, Wilson said "It’s extremely important that … a young man like Drew Wilson or anybody else who’s serving in the armed services has every side heard in this entire debate, because we’re at a critical time in our country."

After the rally, Carnahan welcomed newspaper reporters aboard her bus for an interview on the way to another rally in Moberly. Asked about Iraq, the senator said she would be hesitant to support a large-scale invasion by U.S. troops because of the fear that Saddam Hussein could use chemical or biological weapons against them.

"Any sort of frontal invasion of troops, he would still be able to use chemical and biological weapons on any number … I would like to see it done in some other way that would take less of a commitment of troops," she said, adding that "You do have forces within the country. You have the Kurds in the north and the Shiites in the south that could possibly be of some help there."

The four-day campaign trip was scheduled to wrap up last night in St. Louis.

Carnahan is clearly comfortable on the campaign trail.....

Carnahan comes on the local radio shows around here, and the show hosts are sooooo eager to have her come on that they agree NOT to accept phone calls from listeners....or else Carnahan says "No Show".

One day, a month or so ago, she finally did agree to take some phone calls, and every single call was critical of her. I had flop sweat just listening to the interview!

The opponents of Carnahan are ready to go, they are eager....the question remains, are there enough of us? Some recent poll numbers put Jim Talent ahead of Carnahan.....at worst it is a dead heat. I guess this is good.

After repeating the standard class-baiting rhetoric per instructions from her McCauliffe handlers she makes the ground-breakingly bold statement above.

It's clear she's a democrat - she's an idiot.

Just keep reminding people that after old Mel bought the farm, John Ashcroft acted like an absolute gentleman and quit campaigning and did nothing to protest the MASSIVE press coverage that gave the election to a dead man. Then, when the Democrat governor appointed the "widder-woman" to the senate seat her dead husband had been illegally elected to, not a peep from John Ashcroft. But when Ashcroft came up in the Senate for confirmation as Attorney General, who voted against him? Jean "Widder-Woman" Carnahan. *itch. Democratic *itch. fsf

I hope this isn't a repeat. My post didn't come up.

The Dems have run out of campaign rhetoric! Isn't it interesting how the Dems are NOW using the words, "faith and family" now that President Bush has renewed our belief in both? Whatever happened to "it takes a village"? They should be called the COPY CAT PARTY.

This pathetic piece of dung is the living embodiment of the old story of the guy who finds a poisonous snake in distress and he saves its life. The snake bites him and he is shocked. "I saved your life" he says. The serpent replies, "Yes you did, but still, you KNEW I was a snake." Now perhaps Ashcroft didn't know Carnahan crawled on her belly, but his first clue was knowing she was a RAT! If there were to be a next time, I would hope he would remember that before he wasted any chivalry. I hope the voters remember it also, and send her back to the sewer.

Carnahan is a typical liberal! She is afraid that a handful of patriots may sacrifice their life in a battle to preserve our freedom and prevent a dictator like Saddam Hussein from developing weapons of mass destruction. Carnahan, like former President Clinton, happily stand believing meekness will somehow prevent these men of terror from causing chaos and taking thousands of innocent lives.

"...the Shiites in the south could possibly be of some help there." Ya, Jean, they sure as hell have been lotsa help in Iran!

I certainly hope the people of Missouri toss out this airhead. Just wonder how late the Dems in St.L will keep the polls open? Who will count the buses?

I understand Evita and her ilk have pulled out all the stops. More than just $$$. Bodes ill for Republicans...

I imagine the RNC and/or Talent campaign have a nice commercial or two to remind the voters of her classless behavior. I certainly hope so.

I saw her on the Armed Forces committee on C-Span the other day. This lady is cluless. She really needs to go. Gen. Franks was respectful but clearly underwhelmed.

She fooled him. Most DemocRAT women only drop to their knees. Widder-Woman does a full-frontal, complete prostration. fsf

The old bag was in KC Wednesday or Thursday, down at the 18th and Vine district. Didn't hear about it until late last night. Too bad I missed a chance to "welcome" her to KC :-(

I saw her performance on the Armed Services Commitee. Carnahan and Landrieu proved once again their stupidity as they each read text prepared by soneone other than themselves. Rumsfeld and Franks were as respectful as could be, but your term "UNDERWHELMED" is the gest yet. We must not see these two females again after this election.

This is pathetic. Hugs. Pictures of dead governors. And I'm really trying to figure out what she did to assume 'hero' status. This says less about Carnahan, however, than it says about her supporters.

politicians read from prepared scripts all the time because it sets the tone for any questions, but throws out questions that might be publiclly embarrasing to the candidate. Carnahan has been shielded, using a close group of advisors who keep her from hearing opposition, and only place things in her itinerary that fit into the party platform of deception.

The advisors are puppeteers manipulating the candidate Carnahan into a good ol girl because the Dems know women vote based on emotional issues. After all, how did she get the job of her late husband? Pooooooor woman lost her hubby sob sob boo hoo lets feel sorry for her she isn't qualified but it feeeeeeeels so good to give her a job. burp
