Guard Attacked at U.S. Facility in Cyprus

Thu Aug 1, 5:11 AM ET

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Police in Cyprus were investigating a knife attack on a guard at a U.S. monitoring station in the capital Nicosia on Thursday, a spokesman said.

The Cypriot guard, 63, told police he was attacked while on foot patrol at a perimeter wall of the facility before dawn.

"The guard said he was attacked by two strangers, possibly of Arab origin, with a knife. They inflicted scratch injuries to his stomach and hands," a police spokesman told Reuters.

"We are investigating the claims," he said.

The well-guarded compound is run by the U.S. government-funded Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) which monitors media worldwide for the government.

The U.S. embassy in Nicosia declined to comment, saying it was standard practice not to comment on security issues.

Several months ago people at the facility reported that an unknown intruder attempted to scale the wall of the compound with a ladder, but later disappeared.

This Cypriot guy must have been pretty good to fend off two terrorists armed with a knife.

Sign him up for White House duty!

Exiled Palestinian militant denies causing trouble in Cyprus, asks EU to take him in

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) -- A senior Palestinian militant expelled by Israel and granted temporary shelter in Cyprus denied Wednesday he was causing trouble and said he wants the European Union to take him in as soon as possible.

Abdullah Daoud, 41, is considered the most dangerous of 13 Palestinians expelled May 10 and given temporary shelter in Cyprus under a deal to end a siege at one of Christianity's holiest sites, the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

While the 12 Palestinians were resettled elsewhere in Europe after leaving Cyprus in late May, Daoud is waiting for an EU nation to take him in.

On Tuesday, Cyprus' Justice Minister Nikos Koshis said he wants Daoud to leave because he has refused to take police escorts or cooperate with police and was "associating with suspicious persons."

Daoud said he wasn't doing anything wrong.

"I have been cooperating fully with the police, who have become my good friends, and I have been respecting the law and the terms of my stay on the island fully," Daoud said in an interview with The Associated Press.

"I fully respect the demand not to become involved in any political activities here," he said. "I thank the government and the people of Cyprus for their hospitality. Causing trouble for them is the last thing in the world I want."

Daoud was the Palestinian Authority's intelligence chief in Bethlehem when Israeli forces entered the West Bank earlier this year. Israel accuses him of organizing attacks on Israelis, making explosives, smuggling weapons and providing shelter to members of terrorist groups.

Daoud rejected the allegations.

"It's all lies and Israeli propaganda. I have never killed anyone, and I am against the killing of civilians by either side," he said.

"I do not hate Israelis or the American people, life is too short to hate anyone," he said.

Wearing a white baseball cap, blue jeans and a polo shirt, he smiled often as he spoke.

He said the EU Middle East envoy, Miguel Moratinos, told him after the other Palestinians left in May that he would stay in Cyprus for "one or two weeks" until arrangements were made for him to leave as well.

"It seems Cyprus and I have the same problem. We both want the EU to fulfill their part of the agreement and to take me like the other 12, so that I may also be joined by my family," he said. Asked if he knew why the EU was delaying accepting him, he shook his head and shrugged.

He said he wanted to see his wife and two children, ages 6 and 12, who live in the West Bank town of Nablus.

"I want to be with them and I want an answer from the EU about my fate and an end to my temporary stay here," he said.

These must have been some down-and-out terrorists, to use a mere knife instead of a really dangerous weapon like a 2" GI Joe gun or a bottle of breast milk.

Was he (the guard) armed? Are these bozos still alive? Probably.

On september 12th last year I was sitting in my favorite classroom (other than my own) which is the guys at JROTC when they got a frantic call from an old student who had enlisted in the navy and was now calling from I think the Phillipines. She had just shot an intruder in the belly as he was attacking her and her superior officer as they patrolled the dockside area beside their ship on high alert for obvious reasons! She was crying and hysterical. We were all laughing and congratulating her with glee!

Seems like the petty officer who was with her had been armed with a 9mm (probably unloaded) but he calmly told her to lock and load as the maniac advanced on them waving a machete and screaming praises to Allah. He tells her to take a good sight picture...ready...aim (guy is now within like 10 meters and closing at the run) and FIRE!!! So she caps him with one round to the belly. He goes down but survives.

She's UPSET because she learned in high school (not from ME) that guns are EVIL and she didn't sign on to the military to KILL. Well, duh. That's what a well trained military is supposed to do.

Spain has one of these guys, also. They've restricted him to one of Franco's old and now very run down hunting lodges near Soria, and he complains that he's bored. He could be (should be!) dead, of course, but now he's actually making plans to bring his family to Spain. However, the Spanish aren't really happy about this. I feel sorry for the countries, like Spain and Cypress, that accepted these creeps. They're going to be a problem.

He shouldn't be "associating" with anyone, "suspicious or otherwise. At the very LEAST, he should be under house arrest, and this article should be all about him whining about his lack of freedom.

Well, the good old EU decided that these poor guys who were trapped with Yasser would not be turned over to the IDF and Shin Bet for prosecution. Now they have a problem--a number of problems aka "terrorists"--and they can't figure out what to do. Poor babies. I am really trying hard to squeeze out a tear.

Amazing that it never occurred to the EU that Israel just might be telling the truth : that these guys might be every bit the blood crazed psychopathic killers Israel said they are.

The EU deserves whatever it gets.

I agree. But the EU picked the most vulnerable countries - places like Cypress, Spain and Italy - to house them. I don't think there are any in France, Germany or Belgium. In addition, if I recall correctly, the U.S. (probably Colin Powell) put a lot of pressure on these countries, which are actually friendlier to us than to the EU for many and varied historical reasons.

These guys should have been shot outright, and then nobody would have to worry about them.
