President Bush sternly warned Congress on Friday against passing a bill that limits the personnel and budgetary powers of the head of a new Department of Homeland Security, giving the clearest indication yet that he would veto a measure now before the Senate.

"A time of war is the wrong time to weaken the president's ability to protect the American people," Bush told a White House audience that included governors, mayors, firefighters, police and lawmakers.

The Department of Fatherland Security can do no more to protect you from the generalized threat of politically-motivated criminal attacks than the DoD, FBI, NSA, CIA, Coast Guard, and FAA could as of September 11, 2001.

The only things that can mitigate the threat of future terrorist attacks are: an armed citizenry; an end to all foreign aid; a foreign policy of a republic, not an empire; and control of our borders. Until these are accomplished, Bush's Big New Toy is just another palatial wing on D.C.'s monuments to its own thievery.

With any luck, Congress and the Executive will never agree and this monstrosity won't get passed.

Much tougher talk....I like it. I also like that all the depts he wanted transferred have survived both bills...so far.

Flexibility re: civil service is critical too. I keep being reminded of the guy who worked for the BPA. This guy was caught on tape, urinating into desk drawers of his female co-workers. There had been complaints for months prior to the taping of his actions. It almost took an act of Congress to get him removed. And even then, if I recall correctly, he was let go under the ADA with full disability pay and benefits. SIMPLY because the civil service laws are SO restrictive re: hiring and firing.

Terrorists have been active for 100's of years against one thing or another...
The best any country can do is to slow them down somewhat... but the threat can never be eliminated

Your logic puzzles me. Just because something exists...or HAS existed for 100's of year, does NOT mean that it should not be eradicated. Or that it CAN'T be eradicated.
