KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- As hundreds of Canadian soldiers pile onto planes to make their way home, one small group is staying behind in Afghanistan to continue hunting terrorists.
A new group of Joint Task Force 2 members -- Canada's special forces -- arrived in Kandahar just a few weeks ago, and they plan to be here for some time, the defence minister said on the weekend.
"They're clearly going to be here for some months," John McCallum said while on a visit to the Kandahar airfield.
"Exactly how many (months) will depend on priorities here versus developments elsewhere."
The war has evolved from massive air strikes to an emphasis on small groups of special forces seeking out pockets of suspected terrorists in tight, targeted operations. The fight is also moving into Pakistan, where it is believed al-Qaida and Taliban fighters have fled.
The U.S. military has acknowledged that its forces are now operating in Pakistan but McCallum refused to say whether the Canadians are involved in those efforts.
The group of 40 or so fit men staying on the Kandahar airfield lived in a compound separate from the conventional forces and operated independently.
